Well, it looks like Dr. Liz has a new species to care for—though this one doesn’t have fur, scales, or feathers!

A huge congratulations to Liz and her partner Luke, who are expecting a little bundle of joy this July. Looks like she’ll be swapping her stethoscope for baby bottles for a little while! 👶🏻🍼

🐍 Snake bites in pets 🐍

With the heatwave we are experiencing, we expect to see an increase in the number of snakes about.

Snake bites are an emergency and dogs and cats that have been bitten can deteriorate very quickly. Dogs can die within 25 minutes of a lethal envenomation and so we encourage you to head to your nearest vet immediately. Call the clinic ahead if possible so that we can be prepared for when you arrive. It is vital that you seek treatment as soon as possible if you suspect your dog or cat has been bitten by a snake.

If you have found your pet with a snake, please seek veterinary treatment even if they aren’t showing symptoms. Sometimes symptoms can be delayed, especially with cats.

In our region your pets are most likely to encounter Brown or Tiger snakes. Snake identification IS NOT necessary for us to commence treatment, as we have multi-species antivenom available.

❗️ Signs of snake bite:

• Collapse sometimes followed by a brief period of recovery
• Vomiting or Drooling
• Loss of bladder or bowel control
• Purple gums
• Complete paralysis or paralysis of any limbs
• Weakness and lethargy, Muscle tremors and shaking
• Bleeding from bite wounds (may not be seen) or in vomit, urine, faeces

Keep our contact number handy for emergencies 24/7.

🥵 HOT WEATHER WARNING 🥵

With a scorching week on the way, please monitor your pets.

🌞Over 28 degrees you should be on HIGH alert. Heat stress is an emergency and can be fatal.

🐕 Avoid exercising your pet in the heat (consider early morning or late evening/night time if the temperature allows)

🚰 Ensure pets have constant access to cool, fresh water and shade or bring them into air conditioning if possible. Help wildlife and birds by leaving shallow bowls of water in shady spots away from pets.

🐍 Beware of snakes as they become more active in the heat.

*Check your pets frequently
*NEVER leave pets unattended in hot cars.

Signs of heat stroke to watch out for:
*Excessive drooling
*Difficulty breathing
*Bright red gums
*Collapse

If you are concerned your pet is suffering from heat stroke, please call Maryborough Veterinary Practice on (03) 54 614466 immediately
