Your pet’s enclosure isn’t just a box—it’s their whole world. Thoughtful décor is essential enrichment that keeps minds busy, bodies active, and stress low.

Why décor matters
- Encourages natural behaviors: climbing, digging, perching, hiding, foraging
- Reduces stress: visual barriers and hides create a sense of safety
- Builds confidence: new textures and layouts spark curiosity
- Promotes fitness: varied terrain adds gentle exercise
- Prevents boredom: rotating items keeps the environment fresh

Easy décor ideas
- Reptiles/amphibians: multiple hides, branches, cork bark, rocks, ledges, leaf litter, safe plants
- Small mammals: tunnels, dig boxes, chew-safe wood, cardboard mazes, foraging trays
- Birds: perches of different diameters/textures, shreddables, swings, puzzle feeders, fresh branches (safe species)
- Fish/inverts: caves, driftwood, rockwork, live/safe artificial plants, floating hides, varied substrate

Safety first
- Choose species-safe, non-toxic materials sized to prevent injury
- Secure heavy items; avoid sharp edges and heat-source contact
- Keep enough open floor/flight space for movement
- Clean and rotate décor to maintain interest and hygiene

Give them a habitat, not just a habitat box. What’s your pet’s favorite décor piece? Share a pic below!

Going bioactive for Aussie reptiles? Here’s how to build a living, low‑maintenance habitat that matches our natives’ needs—safely and legally.

Why bioactive?
- Naturalistic look and behavior
- Better humidity regulation and odor control
- A micro‑ecosystem that helps break down waste

Clean‑up crew (CUC) in Australia
- Only use locally sourced, legal microfauna. Never import isopods/springtails.
- Great options: native springtails and “slaters” (woodlice) collected legally from pesticide‑free leaf litter.
- Always check your state regs. Quarantine anything you collect before adding to the enclosure. Never release CUC or substrate outdoors.

Two easy Aussie‑style builds

1) Arid bioactive (bearded dragon, blue‑tongue skink, knob‑tailed/marbled geckos)
- Substrate: ~50% washed sand, 30% clay/loam, 20% topsoil. Pack it so they can dig. Keep a deeper, slightly moist layer under hides.
- Hardscape: rocks, cork, timber, stacked slate. Provide solid basking platforms.
- Plants (hardy, non‑toxic, drought tolerant): Lomandra longifolia (mat‑rush), Dianella (flax lily), pigface (Carpobrotus), saltbush (Rhagodia). For species that nibble (dragons/skinks), stick to edible, pesticide‑free options like hibiscus or nasturtium.
- CUC: native springtails/slaters added to pockets of leaf litter under rocks/wood.
- Notes: Strong UVB appropriate to species; bright full‑spectrum LED for plants.

2) Temperate–tropical bioactive (leaf‑tailed geckos, jungle/carpet/children’s pythons, marbled geckos, water dragons)
- Layers: drainage (LECA), mesh, substrate (coco + cypress/mulch + orchid bark + charcoal), then leaf litter.
- Plants (Aussie, viv‑friendly): Kangaroo fern (Microsorum), maidenhair fern (Adiantum) in humid zones, Hoya australis, native violets (for cooler/moister setups), Lomandra mini varieties, small sedges (Carex/Juncus) for riparian builds.
- CUC: native springtails/slaters; add isopods only if legal in your state.
- Notes: Provide a humidity gradient and good airflow. UVB per species; bright plant lighting.

Best‑practice tips
- Start with captive‑propagated, pesticide‑free plants; rinse roots and quarantine.
- Seed the substrate with leaf litter and decaying wood to feed your microfauna.
- Spot clean, top up leaf litter monthly, and feed the CUC lightly with fish food or leaf litter as needed.
- Biosecurity: Freeze or bake old substrate before disposal. Never dump outdoors.
- Always match temps/UVB to the species (Ferguson zones) and follow your state’s licensing rules for keeping natives.
