After wrapping up my last Perth trip last week and being back home working in the South West this week, I wanted to update you all now that I’m in my third trimester 🤰😱

I will continue to do biomechanical medicine and dentistry appointments for the next few weeks, finishing these up by the 8th August.

I’ll continue to offer routine appointments until 5th September, which will be my last day at work until we are officially on baby watch!

At this stage I am planning to be back at work in early January ☺️❤️

Please note - if your horse is on LONG TERM MEDICATION such as PRASCEND, PREVEQUINE or ERTUGLIFLOZIN - I will need to see them before I go on maternity leave to ensure that I can dispense enough of their medication to get you through until I am back at work, as I will not be taking medication or prescription requests while I am on maternity leave.

Look forward to seeing you all before my little family of 2 becomes 3 💕 ###

For everyone wondering why I have been so busy lately 😅💕 I can finally let the cat out of the bag!! My partner Ben and I are expecting a baby in October 👶🏼🍼

Of course this means there will be a few changes to the practice for the foreseeable future!

- I can’t take X-rays until bubs is out, but I have lots of amazing colleagues who have offered to help out and take images for my clients in the meantime 🙏
- Safety first! I won’t be doing hindlimb lameness exams or nerve blocks, and will be taking increased precautions with all routine work
- Osteopathy/chiro work will continue but techniques involving hind limbs in particular will be reduced
- I will be taking precautions injecting certain medications due to risks to myself and the baby, especially if your horse is not good with needles

At this stage I am planning to be working up until June/July, but I have to play this by ear depending on how big I get and how much I struggle with waddling around carrying a baby as well as equipment etc 😂

I’m hoping to take a minimum of 2 months off when baby is here, and will let everyone know when I am coming back to work 🥰

Hi guys!

Had a bit of a close call yesterday so wanted to put a post up to clarify why handling your horses carefully for the vet is really important.

Stupidly, I got complacent and worked on a horse that was tied up yesterday. While I was treating her shoulder, the mare got her rope over her head and pulled back violently, hitting me quite hard in the back of the head with her own.

If the impact had been a few inches further around my occipital ridge, there’s a good chance I could have been more seriously injured or died from the impact.

This near-miss was a really good reminder for me that equine vets are statistically very likely to sustain injuries requiring hospitalisation or time off work (7 or 8 across our careers), and I know of a few colleagues who have nearly died or have become permanently disabled from head trauma.

Please have your horses haltered, fly sprayed, clean and in a safe workspace for me to work. Please don’t feed hay or other feed while I’m working, keep on the same side as the vet, and follow instructions that I might give you to keep us all safe!

Whats your diagnosis 🤓 Or - what’s wrong with this picture??! This was a winner winner chicken dinner case for Dr Alex this week in Perth, a pretty rare diagnosis but one that has a “pathognomic” presentation, meaning when you see it, you know there’s only one thing it could be! 😄🐴 Write your guesses in the comments and we’ll share the diagnosis soon!

And I’m officially on holidays until 2025 🎉 Finishing up with a selfie with one of my favourite mares and her little ET baby perfectly demonstrating the vibe on my last work day of the year 😂

Over 600 horses treated, an excess of 30,000km travelled, and 1 very tired horse vet!

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who has continually supported me as my practice has evolved into something that I am so excited to see grow even more in 2025 ❤️

Wishing a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all of my clients! See you next year ###🎅🏼🎄✨

2024 Wrap-Up and Exciting Changes for the Year Ahead ✨

As 2024 comes to a close, I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to all of you for your ongoing support throughout the year. It’s been a whirlwind, and I’m incredibly thankful for the trust you place in me to care for your horses.

This year marked a significant milestone for me with the completion of my Graduate Diploma in Animal Biomechanical Medicine and taking a few more steps towards my ISELP certification. These achievements have naturally guided my practice toward a focus on Integrative Sports Medicine and Lameness, areas that I’m deeply passionate about.

As part of this shift, my work in Perth has been steadily increasing, with each trip growing busier. Looking ahead to 2025, I anticipate even more travel for professional commitments – whether this is more frequent trips, longer stays, or both! Unfortunately, this means I can no longer reliably be available for afterhours emergencies.

This was not an easy decision, as I understand how important it is to have access to prompt care during an emergency. However, with my travel schedule, I can’t guarantee the consistency or reliability needed for afterhours care. As of 5pm on the 20th December 2024 I will officially be clocked off for emergencies.

For emergency services going forwards, I encourage my South West clients to reach out to one of the fantastic local teams still offering afterhours support, including Harradines, GEOvet, and Naturaliste Vets.

I will continue to live and work in the South West, providing routine veterinary consultations by appointment, X-rays/ultrasounds, lameness evaluations, and biomechanical medicine appointments when I’m home. I’m excited to continue working with you all in 2025 as we navigate this new chapter together 😊

Look at this big monster 🙈❤️ Kenny is a drum horse (Gypsy X Draft) and he was absolutely humongous! Most people ask how hard it is to adjust a horse, most of the time I say it’s easy - this big boy was a bit of an exception to the rule 😂
