How is your Endurance test training going?

Weโ€™ve been building up to a 10km and she did it with ease. I did a lot of biking on grass today because that can be tough on the body especially when itโ€™s spongy! My fitness needs to improve a bit more but overall it went well.

Iโ€™ll probably only do a 10km every other week, weโ€™ll stick to 7-8kms which are more inline with the legs for the endurance test - the goal is to improve / maintain fitness without pounding the dog so lots of different surface vs all concrete.

Sensitive tummies can be exhausting to deal with because the reason they have a sensitive tummy could be for all kinds of reasons.

Try some simple nutritional tweaks such as:

โญ Raw feeders - transition the dog to a lightly cooked diet, this alone could resolve the dogs issues.

โญ Cooked Turkey & White fish are great main animal proteins - avoid fatty and oily proteins.

โญ Cook everything that goes into your dogs body - in time, you should be able to transition back to a raw diet if that was where you started.

โญ Cooked pumpkin, sweet potato & potato are all great options for sensitive tummies.

โญ Bananas are great for upset tummies, but not all dogs will willingly eat them, so you can mash a little into their food and build up the amount over time.

โญ Veggies like cooked Bok Choy, cooked Green beans, and cooked Zucchini are easy on the tummy and usually well accepted when blended/mashed into their meals.

โญ Cooked Oats can be very soothing for a sensitive digestive system.

โญ Bone broth is excellent for healing tummies.

ENS (Early Neurological Stimulation) is a puppy development program that involves performing a series of gentle handling exercises on puppies from 3 to 16 days of age.

The protocol was originally developed by the military as part of the "Bio Sensor" program and includes five simple exercises performed for a few seconds each day.

Some of my clients had mentioned in passing that they felt that ENS had a negative outcome on some of their dogs, more sensitive dogs, pressure-sensitive, emotionally sensitive, when they hadn't seen that before. When I heard it, I kept it in the back of my mind as these were very experienced breeders with over 20 years of breeding.

I then read similar things from other breeders online, and this was after I had done it with my foundation litter and didn't think it really had the intended outcome.

Of course, genetics matter, and what breeders might be seeing is simply a pairing that didn't go as planned, but I do think observational reality from experienced breeders is worth keeping in mind.

I think for me, it just touched them out too much, and being a primitive breed that is sensitive to touch, especially in the hairless variety, I just didn't think it was necessary when we were already touching them so much from weighing, feeding, and simply moving them around for clearing, etc.

This morning I was listening to a podcast on The Functional Dog Collaborative, and the founder of Puppy Culture, who includes ENS in their program, was on and was talking about it, and I thought what she said was interesting, so I wanted to share the transcript:

Today, I'm remembering Ginny, G-banger, Ginger Ninja - a year ago at just 6 years of age, our family lost her to Lymphoma.

Whilst people praise me for having a nearly 17-year-old, Ginny was the slap in the face, reminding you that you can do everything "right" and still not be in control of their longevity.

Their genes and the environment outside are out of our control, so dogs like Ginny remind us to love them hard while they're here and have no regrets that we should have done more with them when they get to that day when we say goodbye.

Thank you to the universe for sending me a Pittbull x puppy that I had no intention of keeping - we learned a lot together, and we had a lot of fun.

The Finnish Kennel Club has approved a structured Doberman crossbreeding project aimed at tackling one of the breedโ€™s most devastating health issues: Dilated Cardiomyopathy (DCM).

DCM is unfortunately extremely common in Dobermans and can cause arrhythmias, heart enlargement, congestive heart failure, and sudden death. Some studies suggest a very significant percentage of the breed may be affected during their lifetime.

To help improve genetic diversity and reduce the prevalence of serious heart disease, the Finnish Kennel Club has approved carefully monitored outcrossing using selected breeds including:

โ€ข Hovawart
โ€ข Gordon Setter
โ€ข Lapponian Herder
โ€ข German Shorthaired Pointer

These litters will be separately registered and closely monitored under the Finnish Kennel Club framework, with long-term health tracking and assessment.

This is not random breeding and it is not about creating โ€œdesigner dogsโ€.

It is a serious health-focused preservation project supported through official kennel club channels, including positive support from the German Kennel Club.

Whether people agree with outcrossing or not, this is a significant moment in the pedigree dog world.

It raises difficult but important questions:
How do we preserve breeds we love while also addressing major inherited health issues?

The goal is not to erase the Doberman. The goal is to help save its future. โค๏ธ
