Some trophies deserve extra attention and this awesome Red Stag is deserving of just that.
With its heavy antlers and long tines, substantial form modifications were required to keep the antlers from hitting the wall.
We’re looking forward to seeing this one completed.

The long summer months are over and it is that time of year again... HUNTING SEASON! The hounds are bailing, the Fallow are in full croke and very soon the Reds will be roaring. These two free range Reds came in recently; one of them a magnificent 16 point stag and the other a very nice 12 pointer, which the hunter is very proud of, being his first stag. We are gearing up to have a very busy season ahead as hunters are out and making up for a dreadful 2020!

This beast of nature went together recently..
Every now and then taxidermists are met with the challenge of mounting an animal that is out of the norm. And this massive Red Stag was just that. Hunted in late February, months before the rut, his neck and body are smaller. What made this mount tricky was it’s unusually large head. This form had to be modified like a puzzle piece for the cape to fit. We’re pleased with how it’s come together and it will make for a definite conversation piece for the client.

Sambar hunting is no easy task. It takes patience, knowledge, time in the bush and dedication. There are hunters that have been hunting for years and have yet to bag a nice stag. Then, occasionally, there is a hunter that has all of their luck presented to them at once. Daniel had spent a week in the High Country, amongst the snow and dreadful weather only to come out with not one, but two very respectable Sambar stags. A very nice tall and narrow 26 inch and wide 27 inch. We do hope Daniel is now home, with his feet up by the fire, enjoying the spoils of his success.

As a taxidermist, occasionally you get a client that wants something different. Something out of the norm and something that no one else has. When that client is your 14 year old daughter, that has hunted nearly every corner of the planet, you have to oblige and think outside the box. The sculpting of this one has been fun and we can’t wait for completion.

Deer, as with all species of animals and humans, vary in body size. You will often see a young, 18/20 inch Sambar with a large body. In turn, you can also often see a very mature 30 inch stag with smaller body. The antler size is not always an indication of body size. As you can see in this image; two Sambar stags with similar size antlers and similar age, but their body proportions are dramatically different.
