5 essential steps to effectively train your dog while maintaining a positive & stress-free learning environment.
Step 1: TREAT
Start by using treats to reinforce positive behaviours. Choose a high-value treat that motivates your dog.
Step 2: MARK AND TREAT
Use a marker (such as a clicker or a verbal "Yes!") the moment your dog performs the desired behaviour, followed by a treat. This helps your dog associate the action with the reward.
Step 3: VISUAL CUE, BEHAVIOUR, MARK, AND TREAT
Introduce a visual cue (such as a hand signal). When your dog responds correctly within half a second, mark the behaviour and give a treat.
Step 4: ADD THE VERBAL CUE (kissy sounds or name)
Only introduce the verbal cue once your dog is responding to the visual cue correctly 80% of the time. This ensures they understand the behaviour before associating it with a cue.
Step 5: VERBAL CUE, VISUAL CUE, BEHAVIOUR, MARK, REWARD
Once the verbal cue is learned, use it before the visual cue. When your dog performs the behaviour correctly, mark and reward.
