Why do dogs like to rub themselves on smelly things ?
Reasons dogs rub scents on themselves:
Scent marking: Dogs have scent glands on their faces and flanks that secrete pheromones, a natural form of communication. By rubbing on an object or area, they leave their scent, signaling ownership or territory to other dogs.
Camouflage: This behavior, inherited from their wolf ancestors, can help dogs camouflage their scent when hunting. By covering their own smell with the scent of another animal, they become stealthier and less likely to be detected by prey.
Sharing interesting scents: Dogs experience the world primarily through smell. Rolling in something smelly can be their way of bringing an “interesting” scent back to their human “pack” to share information about something they’ve found.
Itching and discomfort: Rubbing their face or body on things can simply be a way to scratch an itch and find relief from skin irritation or other discomfort.
Comfort and security: Dogs may also rub on things to feel more secure in their environment. They might be reclaiming their natural scent after a bath, as the shampoo can remove their familiar odor.
Enjoyment: For some dogs, it’s a pleasurable activity that makes them feel good, similar to how a human might enjoy a particular perfume or scent.
