Your dog’s nervous system is working hard, are you helping it recover?

We talk a lot about training and exercise but one of the most powerful things you can do for your dog is support their nervous system.

A dog who’s chronically overwhelmed can’t learn, can’t relax and certainly isn’t coping. The stress compounds over time and it shows.

So what does nervous system support actually look like?

Sleep - Our dogs need up to 16-18 hours a day. Rest isn’t laziness, it’s where the nervous system repairs and regulates.

Choice - Being able to make small decisions (where to rest, whether to approach, when to move away) reduces the stress of feeling out of control.

Natural behaviours - Sniffing, chewing, foraging. These aren’t just fun, they’re biologically wired ways dogs self-regulate.

Feeling safe - Predictability, not being pushed past threshold, and knowing their signals will be listened to.

Just something to think about when thinking about how you can support your pooch šŸ’›šŸ¾

We don’t like everyone person we meet. Why do we expect our dogs to like every dog they meet?

Friendly reminder: Your dog doesn’t have to like every dog they meet and that’s completely okay!

We wouldn’t walk up to a stranger and expect an instant friendship so why do we hold our dogs to a different standard?

A well-socialised dog doesn’t mean a dog that bounces up to every dog at the park. It means a dog that can move through the world feeling safe and confident. šŸ’›

Pulling on the lead. Jumping at visitors. A recall that goes out the window the moment something exciting appears.

These are some of the most common challenges clients bring to me. And I get it.

They’re frustrating, and of course you want to tackle them.

But here’s what I’ve learnt: before we can work on any of these behaviours, we often need to go back to something more fundamental.

✨Emotional Regulation ✨

If your dog can’t self-settle, if they haven’t yet learned how to come down from a state of arousal - everything else, unfortunately, becomes an uphill battle.

You can’t teach a dog who’s overwhelmed. You can’t reach a dog who’s already over their threshold.

When we help our dogs build the capacity to regulate their emotions, the other parts start to fall into place.

Our dogs are always communicating with us and the world around them. Through every bark, every whine, every wag of their tail. But so much of what they’re saying goes beyond vocalisation and obvious body language.

The way they hold their body, the tension and the softness or hardness their face, it’s all a constant conversation happening right in front of us.

As their advocates, their safe place and their voice in a world that they can’t navigate alone, it’s OUR responsibility to show up for them.

And that means doing the work. Learning their language.

Looking beyond the obvious and tuning into understanding them deeper. The more fluent we become in them, the deeper the bond grows, the better we can protect and support them.

Start paying attention, they deserve it šŸ«¶šŸ¼šŸ¾

I am NOT going to teach you how to get your dog to ā€˜behave’ or be ā€˜obedient’.

I will teach you about how compassion, understanding and safety improves our bond with our dogs and actually improves their behaviour.

Whether it’s leash skills, reactivity, lack of confidence or those pesky puppy challenges, understanding the behaviour is the first step, from there we can implement personalised training and support for your dog.

Your dog is not broken. they’re communicating the best way they know how.

Behaviour is information, not a label.

Behind every reaction, big feeling or challenging moment is a dog trying to cope, learn and be understood.

All breeds.
All shapes.
All sizes.

Different families.
Different stories.

But they all have one thing in common;
dedicated humans who are showing up for them šŸ«¶šŸ¼

I’m so grateful to work with dogs and their families who are committed to learning, growing and building trust through positive reinforcement training.

Every dog deserves to feel safe, understood and supported.

Very often when a dog is barking, lunging, growling, pulling on lead or struggling to settle, we jump straight to:

How do we stop it?

But it’s important to understand that behaviour is just the surface level.

It’s communication.
It’s information.
It’s your dog telling you something.

The real question to ask is:

Why is it happening?

Behind every challenging behaviour there is usually context we’ve overlooked.

• pain or discomfort
• fear/anxiety/frustration
• overstimulation
• lack of sleep and decompression
• past experiences
• unmet needs

When we focus only on stopping the behaviour, we might silence the message our dog is trying to give us.

Real training isn’t about control.

It’s about understanding, support and helping our dogs feel safe enough to choose different behaviours.

From a human perspective it can often look like our dogs are being ā€˜dramatic’, especially in situations that we don’t see as necessarily scary.

But remember, fear isn’t a choice.

Your dog is not choosing to be scared, they literally don’t feel safe.

What can often look like ā€˜overreacting’ is your dog not being able to process what’s happening and genuinely feeling fear.

Next time you find yourself thinking your dog is being dramatic, try not to label it. Look at the environment, what’s around you? What could be scary? Provide more space, provide reassurance… take your time to understand.

Your dog will love you for it šŸ’›
