🐱 If you’re committed to taking on a kitten and sharing your life with them for the next 14 years or longer, considering where to get one is important in helping to make the right choice of pet for you and your lifestyle.

You could choose a kitten from a rehoming/rescue centre, buy a pedigree from a breeder, or get one through friends or family, for example. The experiences of early kittenhood and the care they’ve received, can have a lasting effect on a kitten's physical and emotional health and behaviour. Understanding their individual circumstances and needs will help you choose the right kitten and support them to settle into your home. 🐈

It’s important to know what to look for and what questions to ask, so explore our expert tips and advice, including a handy ‘Kitten Checklist’, to help you find a healthy, friendly kitten 👉 https://icatcare.org/articles/choosing-a-kitten

Why red lights?

Our hospital beds have 3 different light settings to make our patients more comfortable. The red lights are for overnight - a softer light to make it easier to sleep without being left completely in the dark.

Buddy had an "whoops" with a tractor last weekend and had to have a sleepover. He was looking relaxed in his red bed when he was checked at bed time.

I spy one of our patients resting quietly in his hospital bed - the calm colours, the underfloor heating and the varied light settings are making such a difference to our patients.

Will Romeo find his Juliet?

With eyelashes to die for, stunning white teeth and fresh breath, Romeo is hoping to find his Juliet.

Romeo visited today for a Dental SPA - scale, polish and full mouth assessment, including full mouth x-rays. He has gone home with beautiful clean teeth and is ready to put his heart on the line for love 😍😍😍

WARNING - Virulent Systemic Feline Calicivirus

Martha would like to let you know that several cases of Virulent Systemic Feline Calicivirus have been detected in cats in South Australia.

Feline Calicivirus (FCV) is a common infection in cats caused by several strains of calicivirus. It causes flu-like symptoms and more severe disease in some cats. We routinely vaccinate cats to protect them against FCV.

A particularly virulent strain of FCV – Virulent Systemic Feline Calicivirus (VS-FCV) – emerged in England in 2003. Australia's first outbreak was reported in Sydney in June 2016. We currently have an outbreak in South Australia.

Cats can show the following signs:
Fever
Inappetence - they have painful oral ulceration and refuse to eat
Limping
Upper respiratory signs - sneezing and runny eyes
Lower respiratory signs - difficulty breathing and coughing
Oedema/swelling of face and limbs
Ulcerated paws

Mortality rates for affected cats are up to 70%.

While vaccination against FCV does not protect against VS-FCV, keeping your cat up to date with vaccinations is the best way to keep your fabulous feline fit and healthy - just ask Martha!
