ANNOUNCEMENT: WE HAVE MOVED!!
Exciting times here at WEVS: We've moved our office to Bacchus Marsh! We still have our facilities in Werribee South, from where we'll be doing a scheduled run on weekdays to keep travel prices down for our local, loyal customers (Little River, Lara, etc).
Our cute little factory is already proving a game changer, allowing us faster access to our existing clients, freeing us up to see more patients (avoiding the Wyndham traffic chaos!!), and allowing us to offer our services more widely in Moorabool and the south of Macedon.

🫵QUIZ LOVERS, UNITE!🙋🏻‍♀️🙋🏻‍♀️

Here are some images from a couple of recent gastroscopes performed by Dr Miranda showing that, sometimes, we find more than just stomach ulcers! 🐴

Any guesses as what these parasites are?

SHORT TERM AGISTMENT IS BACK!
We have some exciting things coming in 2026.
Not wanting to preempt anything, but we will soon have more vacancy at our werribee south facilities meaning we can offer short term agistment once more.
It’s a great environment for horses competing at Werribee Park being nice and close, but far more relaxed.
Head to our web site to find out more: www.wevs.com.au , or email us to get further info and a booking form: [email protected]

HOT WEATHER 🥵🥵☀️☀️🌡️

With the weather rapidly heating up, there are a few things we need to think about and do to ensure our horses comfort and welfare, and to mitigate any ill effects of the increasing temperatures and any sudden heat waves.

- Shade/Shelter: provide your horse free access to shade or shelter. The provision of shade is recommended to safeguard horse welfare in summer.

- Water: Ensure there is access to ample fresh, clean water. A 500kg horse typically requires 25-55 litres of water daily. Larger volumes also tend to stay cooler. Insufficient access to water can lead to dehydration, colic and other health issues.

- Exercise: if you must exercise your horse, please do so in the early morning or very late evening, when temperatures and solar radiation levels are lower. It is also recommedsd to avoid non-grass surfaces. Horses are at increased risk of heat stress and exertional heat illness when worked in hot weather.

Signs of Heat Stress:
- fatigue
- Increased heart rate (normal range 28-44bpm)
- re**al temperature > 38.4°C
- Slow recovery from exercise
- Ileus (gut stasis) leading to colic
- Neurological signs

What to do?
- hose your horse with cool tap water- do not use ice/icy water. Hose or pour buckets of cool water over your horse until HR is below 60 beats/minute, and ideally returned to normal rate.
- encourage drinking of water, ideally with electrolytes. Adding molasses or KER Drink Up may encourage water consumption.
- call your Vet

MERRY CHRISTMAS – SEE YOU IN 2026

To all our wonderful clients we wish you a joyous safe festive season. Thank you for supporting us, and trusting us with the care of your beloved four legged friends throughout 2025.

We are off for a rejuvenating break from 4pm today until 9am Monday 5th January 2026. During this period we will have a vet on call intermittently for emergencies only for our active clients. Please call 0418 385 223 and listen to message bank for contact details of the vet on call.

At WEVS we highly value the support of our regular clients who, despite rising veterinary fees, have had us intimately involved with preventative health care for their pets throughout 2025. They also resist the pull of corporates, lay providers, and large teaching institutes who offer discounted (or even free) services and medications. By doing this they help us keep the lights on, the wages paid, and facilitate us to continue to provide emergency services in hours and out of hours. Unfortunately overhead costs and a dwindling number of equine vets means we can now only provide emergency and after hours care to these valued clients who support us to do so.

MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR

Can you believe there is not even 4 weeks between these photos??
I have been absolutely thrilled with the amazing care this beautiful girl’s mum has provided, and how well this wound has healed.
It just shows what the body is capable of when the right conditions are provided for healing!!

Winner of Best Neeeeiiiggghhh-bourhood Halloween Costume 2025 goes to…………. 🎃👻

This sweet mare took her Halloween costume making a little *too* seriously, after getting caught on her gate latch.

A reminder to check gateways and access tracks to ensure there’s *plenty* of clear space to go through safely.

Our Story

Western Equine Veterinary Services (WEVS) are dedicated local horse veterinarians servicing Werribee, Bacchus Marsh, and their surrounding districts. Along with our predecessor practice (Dr Ray Horsey and Associates) we have been delivering experience, honesty and genuine care to the horses of Melbourne's west for over 45 years. We now also provide limited mobile small animal services during business hours (unfortunately we cannot offer these services after hours).

Our practice is principally based at 58 Derrimut Road Werribee VIC, 25 minutes west of the Melbourne cbd. We also run daily services from Bacchus Marsh and between the two locations we service other districts within a 50km radius (Rockbank, Melton, Sunbury, Toolern Vale, Gisborne, Bullengarook, Myrniong, Greendale, Ballan, Balliang, Tarneit, Little River, Lara).

We come to you, but for certain cases we have access to a property in Werribee South where we can monitor sick or injured horses until they are well enough to go home.
