Dr Pat saw beautiful Laela because she had been vomiting.
Her blood test was normal but her tummy looked a little unusual- it seemed a bit larger and irregular compared to normal.

We could feel that things weren’t normal in there so Dr Rod did an abdominal ultrasound and that’s when we found something big- a 20cm cancer on her spleen!
Cancers of the spleen can get very large sometimes without making dogs sick because it doesn’t make the dog feel unwell unless it bleeds.

In this case, it had not bled but had become so large that it was squashing the stomach so food couldn’t get through which is why Laela was vomiting.
We took Laela straight to surgery and were very grateful to have the Ligasure which cuts and cauterizes blood vessels at the same time.
This allowed us to deal with all the adhesions and big blood vessels as quickly and safely as possible.

Laela came through the surgery really well and was able to eat without vomiting the next day!

And is now home living a HAPPY and HEALTHY life!

🐶 A Cough That Needed a Closer Look 🐶

This gorgeous pup came to see us with a persistent cough that was most noticeable after eating, drinking, or running around. Her owners had also noticed that her snoring was becoming worse.

To investigate, we started with X-rays to assess the lungs, heart and trachea but this didn't reveal an obvious cause for the coughing. As the X-rays didn't provide a diagnosis for the cough, the next step was to perform a bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL).

A BAL is a procedure performed under a general anaesthetic. A sterile tube is passed into the lower airways through the breathing tube, and a small amount of sterile saline is flushed into a section of the lung before being gently suctioned back out. The recovered fluid contains cells from deep within the airways, allowing us to look for inflammation, infection and other respiratory diseases that can't be diagnosed on X-rays alone.

The samples were sent to the laboratory for analysis, which confirmed inflammatory airway disease.

With a diagnosis in hand, we were able to start treatment with a Flixotide® (fluticasone) inhaler. This inhaled medication delivers anti-inflammatory medication directly to the lungs, helping reduce airway inflammation while minimising effects on the rest of the body.

Holly is adjusting quite well to her new life with a puffer, her coughing and snoring have improved significantly since beginning treatment! Look how cute she is with her little Puffer!

This week we're shining the spotlight on one of our fantastic Small & Large Animal Veterinary Nurses, Megan! 💙

How long have you been part of the Midcoast Vets family?
🐶 4.5 years!

What's your favourite part of the job?
❤️ Getting out of the clinic and helping with our large animal consults! Megan especially loves working with horses, and if there's an equine anaesthetic involved, she's definitely in her happy place! 🐴💉

If you weren't working in the animal industry, what would you be doing?
🌏 Travelling around Australia, 🐶 dog grooming, or doing something in the agricultural industry.

What's one thing you wish you could change about the veterinary industry?
🐾 More recognition and support for mental health within the veterinary industry, particularly around the time pressures and demands placed on veterinary teams. At the end of the day, everyone just needs a little more kindness. ❤️

Megan is one of those team members who is just as happy working with a tiny patient in the clinic as she is heading out the door to help with our larger four-legged friends. Her love for large animals, especially horses, is something that really shines through in everything she does. 🐴💚

And while we're introducing Megan this week, we're also saying a little "see you later" for now! 🥹

Megan has recently headed off on maternity leave, swapping her vet nursing duties for what we're sure will be her most exciting role yet—mum! 👶🏼💕

She'll be very missed around the clinic (and we're sure the horses will miss her too!), but we're so excited for Megan as she waits for her little bub to arrive and begins this amazing new chapter.

We wish you all the very best, Meegs! Enjoy the cuddles, the excitement and all those precious first moments. We can't wait to hear all about your newest little adventure when you're ready to share! 💙🐾

Do you remember Hercules? The little FIV positive Kitty who had to have his Thyroid removed? 🐈‍⬛

We're thrilled to say the surgery was a success! 🎉 The entire affected left thyroid gland was carefully removed without damage to the surrounding vital structures. Even better, the pathology results confirmed it was a thyroid adenoma, meaning it was not cancerous.

At Hercules' one-week post-operative check, the transformation was incredible. 💚 He is eating well, gaining weight, feeling brighter, and finally getting back to being the happy cat he deserves to be.

Cases like Hercules' remind us why we never give up. They also highlight the importance of advanced diagnostics, collaboration with specialists, and having experienced surgeons who are willing to tackle complex cases when standard treatments don't achieve the desired outcome.

A huge congratulations to Hercules and his dedicated family for sticking with him every step of the way, and well done to Dr Fabian and the entire team involved in his care. We couldn't be happier with this outcome!

🐾 TICK SEASON IS HERE — AND THEY’RE DEADLY. 🐾

Ticks aren’t just a nuisance — tick paralysis can be life-threatening and can progress incredibly quickly.
Sadly, we have already seen fatalities this tick season, which is a heartbreaking reminder of just how serious these little parasites can be.
