This foal came to us for repair of an umbilical hernia — a condition where there is a small opening in the body wall around the belly button (umbilicus). Through this opening, abdominal contents such as fat or intestine can bulge out, creating the soft swelling seen under the belly.

Some small hernias may close on their own as foals grow, but larger hernias can pose a risk if intestine becomes trapped, which can lead to pain and serious complications. Surgical repair helps prevent these problems and allows the foal to grow and develop normally.

During surgery, the hernia contents are placed back where they belong, and the body wall defect is securely closed with strong sutures. Our patient recovered beautifully after the procedure. ✨

And because efficiency is key… we also his gelding procedure at the same time! 😄

Wishing this handsome little guy a speedy recovery and many happy adventures ahead.

🐾 From Ouch to Outstanding — Millie’s Brave Recovery Journey 🐾

Little Millie took an unexpected tumble off the lounge and sadly injured one of her front legs. She came into our Macksville Clinic to see Dr Rod with a 5/5 lameness — meaning she was unable to put any weight on the leg at all (ouch… that’s VERY sore!).

Dr Rod also noticed an increased lateral deviation of her right carpus. This means Millie’s wrist joint was bending abnormally to the side instead of staying stable and straight. The carpus is basically the dog equivalent of our wrist in humans.

To get answers quickly, Millie had X-rays straight away. These revealed:
🐾 A rupture of the medial collateral ligament of the carpus
🐾 A non-displaced fracture of the distal ulna

In human terms, the ulna is one of the two bones in your forearm, running from your elbow to your wrist. A rupture means the ligament had torn completely, making the wrist unstable. Ligaments are super important because they help hold joints together and keep them moving correctly and safely.

Dr Rod did a repair using bone anchors and suture. In such small bones that is quite tricky to get the anchors exactly right as there is no margin for error!
It went well which put the carpus/wrist back in alignment and secure so the joint could be stable and comfortable and the ligament could heal over time.

We’re happy to report Millie’s surgery went beautifully and She got to rock a very fashionable cast and splint for a few weeks while everything healed just as it should. ✨

💪Little Lexi's not so funny bone situation 💪

Poor little Lexi was sadly hit by a car resulting in a fractured ulna — one of the two bones in the forearm (similar to the bones between our elbow and wrist in humans).

His fracture occurred just below the “funny bone”… but there was absolutely nothing funny about this injury. The break extended directly into the elbow joint, making it a very serious condition. When a fracture involves a joint, it can disrupt the smooth cartilage surface that allows the joint to move comfortably and normally.

Without urgent surgical repair, injuries like this can lead to:
⚠️ Severe arthritis
⚠️ Chronic pain
⚠️ Permanent stiffness
⚠️ Long-term loss of limb function

If left untreated, the joint can heal unevenly, causing painful bone rubbing and ongoing mobility problems for the rest of a pet’s life.

To give Lexi the very best chance at a full recovery, Dr Rod performed surgery on a Sunday so treatment could begin immediately ❤️

As you can see on the X-rays, the fracture clearly extended through the elbow joint.
Dr Rod repaired the fracture by compressing the ends together so there was no gap in the joint cartilage and then using a plate and screws to hold it in place🩺✨

Lexi's Mum assures us that Lexi is doing great and is still up to Mischief and is as cheeky as ever!

Do you remember the adorable litter of Dachshund puppies that James delivered via C-section a few months ago? 🐾

Well, two of the pups came back to see us for their 12-week vaccinations this week… and wow, have they grown! 😍

It’s always so special watching our tiny patients grow into happy, healthy puppies and then into adults . We loved seeing these little sausages again for their next health check and vaccines! 💉🐶

💙 🐦 Mr Pelican is finally free 🐦💙

After Dr Farbian successfully removed two fishing hooks, this beautiful pelican spent a short staycation in care with a wildlife carer recovering and regaining strength.

Now he has been safely released back into our beautiful Nambucca Valley where he belongs.

How amazing is it to see him flourishing and free again! 🌊✨
