Golden Retrievers š¶š
Everyone meet Mila and her baby sister Maple who are Golden Retrievers.
Golden Retrievers are known for their affectionate nature, intelligence, and friendly demeanor, making them one of the most popular family pets. They thrive on companionship, love to be active, and are always eager to pleaseāwhether itās playing fetch, going for a swim, or simply being by your side.
Like all breeds, Goldens have specific health concerns that owners should be aware of:
ā ļøHip & Elbow Dysplasia
This is due to 3 main reasons:
1ļøā£ Their genetic makeup.
When looking for a puppy from this breed ensure that their parents should have had hip and elbow X-rays (aka scores) done. If their parents have hip or elbow dysplasia, itās likely the puppy will.
2ļøā£ Correct nutrition for ālarge breedā dogs during puppyhood.
3ļøā£ Exercise. Not over exercising until 18months old (skeletal maturity). This means not taking them on ārunsā and not pushing them to exercise.
ā ļø Ear Infections ā
Due to their floppy ears and living in a humid location, moisture can get trapped increasing the risk of infections. The most common infection is yeast. Regular ear cleaning helps prevent issues. Otoflush and Kleo are our recommendations.
ā ļø Skin Allergies & Hot Spots ā
Genetically, Goldens can have allergic skin disease, which can lead to itching and superficial infections. Maintaining a clean coat can minimise hot spots (skin infections).
ā ļø Cancer Risk ā
Unfortunately, Goldens have a higher-than-average risk of certain cancers.
ā¼ļøDesexed females are 4ļøā£ x MORE likely to develop some cancers than entire females.
