"Georgie" is a 21month old Labradoodle
🐩🐩🐩
She has a very deep red coat, "love me long time eyes", and a beautiful gentle diposition

She is looking for a new home through no fault of her own

She is desexed, gentle with cats, loves dogs, sleeps in her own crate, and is a velcro dog. She will thrive in a home that is fenced and with constant human company....no 9-5 fur parents for Queen Georgie!

There will be a small adoption fee

People often say they “love dogs” — but respecting a dog’s space is part of loving dogs too.

Today I had a small dog lying calmly on her blanket with a clear sign on the leash saying:
“In training — please ignore.”

Another couple approached with their dog and said,
“He wants to say hello.”

I politely replied,
“She’s in training, please don’t come closer.”

The reaction?
Upset. Offended. Shocked that I said no.

This is something dog owners and trainers deal with constantly.

Not every dog needs to greet your dog.
Not every dog wants interaction.
And training moments matter.

When a handler asks for space, it’s not rude. It’s responsible.

Some dogs are learning neutrality.
Some are nervous.
Some are reactive.
Some are recovering from bad experiences.
Some are simply practising calm behaviour around distractions.

The biggest problem is that many people still believe dogs should meet every dog they see. They don’t. Constant forced greetings often create frustration, over-arousal, leash reactivity, and poor social skills.

A well-socialised dog is not a dog that says hello to everyone.
A well-socialised dog can calmly ignore others and stay connected to their handler.

Please don’t take it personally when someone asks for distance.
Respecting boundaries helps dogs succeed

Stress isn’t just behaviour.
It’s chemistry.
When dogs are overwhelmed, adrenaline, noradrenaline and cortisol take over

That’s survival mode — not stubbornness, not dominance, not

“bad behaviour"

Real emotional connection increases serotonin and oxytocin — the hormones that support calmness, trust and bonding.

Food has its place in training. I use it.
But treats alone don’t create emotional security.

If we want calmer dogs, we need to understand what’s happening inside them — not just control what we see on the outside.

Understanding changes everything.

I’m seeing so many prong collars and e-collars all over TikTok and Instagram lately

It’s being presented as “normal.”

It’s being marketed as “communication.”

It’s being sold as “balanced.”

But normal doesn’t mean necessary!!!

And popular doesn’t mean ethical!!!

Aversive tools work by discomfort, pain, or the threat of it.

That’s not training — that’s suppression

You might stop behaviour in the moment, but you don’t fix the underlying emotion.

Fear, stress, frustration and anxiety don’t disappear. They go underground.

That’s when fallout happens.

There is no behaviour that requires pain to teach it.

Clear structure, timing, reinforcement, distance, proper setup, and relationship building work. It takes skill. It takes patience. It takes consistency. But it builds dogs that feel safe, not shut down

If you’re unsure about equipment, ask.

If something feels wrong in your gut, trust it.
Your dog deserves to feel safe while learning

That cute face?

"Lucky" Border Collie x Pomeranian

Inside is a fast brain and a lot of drive

High-drive puppies don’t just need play and exposure — they need early learning and clear guidance.

Puppy preschool group classes are valuable:

Social learning 👩‍🦽👥️👨‍👦

Safe exposure to other dogs and people
🐕🦮🐕‍🦺🧔‍♂️👨‍🦳🙎‍♀️👱‍♀️

Practising skills around distractions
🐦🛴🚙🦽

But they work best when they’re not the only thing a puppy gets.

A few private lessons alongside puppy preschool can:

💚 Teach calm focus before arousal kicks in

🧡 Help the puppy learn how to think, not just what to do

💙 Prevent bad habits forming between classes

🩷 Tailor training to your home, your routine, and your puppy’s drive level

The strongest starts come from combining both:

➡️ group classes for exposure

➡️ private lessons for foundations

That’s how you raise a dog who’s confident, capable, and easy to live with

We can choose better !!!

Dogs deserve bodies that work, not bodies that suffer for human preference

As dog professionals, we don’t get to look away.
Breathing difficulty is not ‘normal for the breed’.
If a dog can’t breathe freely, something is very wrong

Hey everyone 😊

Bit of a random one — I’m looking for a client dog that howls, ideally on cue, for a TV commercial filming in February

No Huskies or Malamutes !!!

If your dog is a howler and you’d be keen, flick me a message or drop a comment. A short video is a bonus but not essential

Thanks!

What To Do

1. Give a clear cue for calm.
Pop the pup in with a chew or stuffed Kong. No big goodbyes

2. Reduce stimulation.
Cover part of the pen, turn off the chaos, and make the environment calmer

3. Keep sessions short at first.
A few minutes of success beats 20 minutes of distress. Build up slowly

4. Reward quiet.
As soon as your pup pauses the howl—even one second—reward verbally with a calm
"Good boy/ Good girl"

5. Don’t release during a meltdown.
That teaches “Howling = freedom.” Wait for a tiny break in the noise, then let them out

6. Watch their schedule.
Most howling pups are actually overtired. Young puppies need far more sleep than we think.

Your puppy isn’t giving you a hard time—they’re having a hard time. With calm, consistent practice, the playpen becomes a happy, safe place to rest
