โš ๏ธ CASE STUDY WEDNESDAY

Sasha came into the clinic for her routine spey when we noticed a lump on her ni**le. This turned out to be a mammary gland tumour, which we were able to surgically remove.

๐Ÿ”Ž Did you know?
๐Ÿพ Mammary gland tumours are one of the most common tumours in female dogs.
๐Ÿพ Around 50% can be malignant (cancerous).
๐Ÿพ Dogs that are desexed before their first heat have less than a 1% chance of developing these tumours later in life.
๐Ÿพ Regular checks at home and yearly vet visits are key for early detection.

Thanks to early action, Sasha is now recovering well ๐Ÿ’• A little reminder to always keep an eye out for any new lumps or bumps on your petsโ€”it could save their life.

IS YOUR PETS TICK PREVENTION UPTO DATE?
We are now entering Paralysis Tick season, in our clinic alone we have treated over 10 tick paralysis cases in the past month!

WHY ARE PARALYSIS TICKS SO DANGEROUS?
After attaching, the tick feeds on the hostโ€™s blood, injecting small amounts of saliva into the dog or cat. The tickโ€™s saliva contains a toxin that disrupts the connection between the nerves and the muscles of the body, causing weakness and paralysis. Not only does this affect muscles that help the animal stand and walk, but it can also affect muscles used for breathing and swallowing, leading to serious and life threatening conditions.

WHAT ARE COMMON SIGNS OF TICK PARALYSIS?
Incoordination
Weakness
Collapse
Vomiting or retching
Change in sound of bark or meow
Difficulty breathing

Meet Missy! ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ’›
Missy, a sweet 16-week-old American Staffy, came to see us after her paw-rents became very worried โ€” sheโ€™d been vomiting all morning and was feeling extremely lethargic.

Our veterinarians examined her and took radiographs, which revealed two abnormal masses in her stomach. Missy was admitted right after for an emergency exploratory laparotomy, where we discovered two rocks lodged in her small intestine ๐Ÿชจ๐Ÿชจ

The surgery was a success โœ… and Missy is now back home recovering โ€” happy, healthy, and getting plenty of cuddles from her family. ๐Ÿถ๐Ÿ’–

โš ๏ธ Puppies explore with their mouths โ€” chewing or swallowing foreign objects can become stuck within their stomach and quickly become life-threatening.
If your concerned your pet has ingested something they shouldnโ€™t, vomiting, lethargic, or off their food, seek veterinary care immediately.
