Just a friendly reminder for all our fellow Aussie keepers facing the official start of winter and this week's endless rain!
โ€‹Please pay extra attention to your flocks in this weather, especially the girls who are still pushing through a late moult.

โ€‹We just found our Olive Egger, Martha, looking a bit miserable. We initially thought she was just having a rough time with her moult, but she was definitely looking a bit sad. Thankfully, it is nothing serious, no respiratory issues or disease but just like us, chooks can sometimes feel "under the weather" with a sudden temperature drop and constant dampness. She just had a good meal, a little time in the ICU (Intensive Chicken Care Unit)with some supportive warmth is exactly what she needs right now.

โ€‹We know this is the most challenging time of the year for most keepers. It is freezing, wet, muddy and not really fun when there is nothing much to harvest ๐Ÿชบ. It is so easy to want to stay inside where it's warm and become a little less "attentive" to our daily coop duties. But this is exactly when these unexpected things happen.

โ€‹So, grab your warmest jacket and pull on those muddy boots.
We've got this! ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿค

Spotted this feed at a major retailer today. (If you are in Australia, we know you know exactly where this is ๐Ÿ˜‰).

โ€‹While many seasoned keepers might pass this by, we thought it was worth pointing out for those just starting their poultry journey. Itโ€™s an easy pickup while shopping, and the price tag might look tempting at first glance. However, a quick look at the nutritional panel tells a completely different story.

There are many issues in this feed but major issue - โ€‹With crude protein at just 14%, this is a bare-minimum layer ration. It is certainly not built to support the specific needs of a heritage flock or birds going through a moult.โ€‹

โ€‹This is a gentle reminder that the nutrient analysis check must always come before the price check. Ensuring the feed actually suits your flock is where true value lies. Sometimes, a bargain bag can cost you more in the long run.

โ€‹Don't just let your chooks "survive" let them "thrive". ๐Ÿซถ

As the weather cools down, your flockโ€™s immune systems face their biggest challenge. Cold, damp conditions are the perfect breeding ground for illness. ๐Ÿ‚๐ŸŒฌ๏ธ

โ€‹When you walk out to the coop, the first thing you should always be looking for are the subtle signs of a "sick chicken": huddled, separated, feathers ruffled, head tucked, or tail down.
โ€‹When you spot a sick bird, Earlier Intervention is Always Best. You must immediately remove them from the flock and place them in an isolation cage.
โ€‹
๐Ÿฅ The Isolation Cage
It does not need to be anything fancy. We have an ICU (Intensive Chicken Unit) that was originally a reptile cage we picked up secondhand from Marketplace. It comes with a heat pad, and the enclosed box provides a really calm environment. A simple dog crate with a heat source will also do a fine job, or even a large cardboard box with a hot water bottle. As much as we wish you'd never need one, if you are keeping chickens, please always have a setup handy just in case.

โ€‹Importance of Isolation:
โ€‹1. Monitor ๐Ÿ•ต๏ธโ€โ™€๏ธ
It is impossible to know how much a sick chicken is actually eating and what their p**p looks like when they are inside the main coop. Isolation allows you to monitor their exact input (feed/water) and output (p**p). This is vital for diagnosis.

โ€‹2. Provide Supportive Care ๐Ÿฒ
In the hospital cage, you can provide the intensive, focused care they need to recover.

โ€‹3. Prevent Spreading ๐Ÿฆ
By isolating the sick bird immediately, you protect the rest of your healthy flock from whatever is ailing the individual, preventing a whole-coop outbreak.
โ€‹
Supportive Care
It is about minimizing stress and maximizing their bodyโ€™s ability to heal.

โ€ข โ€‹Quiet & Warm Dark Place: Use a large dog crate or a sturdy cardboard box in a quiet room, garage, or even inside your house. Dim lighting reduces stress and encourages rest.

โ€ข โ€‹Food & Clean Water: Provide highly palatable, nutrient-dense food (like a wet mash) and fresh water (add vitamins/electrolytes if needed).

โ€‹The MOST Crucial Element: WARMTH ๐Ÿ”ฅ
Many new keepers underestimate the absolute importance of warmth. When a chicken is sick, they almost always stop eating or lose their appetite gradually. When they stop eating, they cannot generate the energy (thermogenesis) needed to maintain their body temperature.
โ€‹If a sick, non-eating chicken is left in a cold coop, 100% of their rapidly dwindling energy reserves will be spent just trying to stay warm. They have very little energy left to fight the infection or recover. Warmth is life-saving supportive care regardless of the illness.

Exchequer Leghorn Standard

๐Ÿ” Friendliness (Hen): 4/5 friendlyโ€ฆ but always on the move.
๐Ÿ“ Friendliness (Rooster): 3/5 depends which version you get.
๐ŸŒพ Feed Consumption: 2/5 light eaters, big results.
๐Ÿ’ฉ Production: 2/5 efficient system.
๐Ÿฅš Egg Production: 5+ white eggs like a full-time job.
๐Ÿชบ Broodiness: 3.5/5 part-time layer, part-time professional sitter.
๐ŸŽ“ Smartness: 4/5 clever, alert, and slightly stubborn.

โœ… Pros
- Fast feathering and fast growing, chicks are easy mode in the brooder.
- Easy to s*x early thanks to their very enthusiastic comb development.
- Feed efficient birds that convert very little into very impressive egg output.
- Lay large white eggs that donโ€™t match their slim body size (overachievers).
- Hens are quirky, friendly, and slightly mischievous, always up to something.
- โ€œJack Russell in feather formโ€ busy, clever, always moving, and absolutely convinced theyโ€™re in charge.
- Hardy and easy to care for, give them the basics and theyโ€™ll get to work.
- Blend well in mixed flocks; light, active, and adaptable between large and small breeds.
- Very efficient overall, ticks the boxes for practical egg production with personality.
-Hens are elegantโ€ฆ roosters are dramatic with opinions.

โŒ Cons
- Lean and light -> natural escape artists. Low fences are more of a suggestion than a rule.
Alert and always on the move, not a sit-and-relax type of chicken.
- They can handle pens, but they really prefer space, greens, and things to investigate. Boredom leads to โ€œcreative decisions.โ€
- Roosters can be hit or miss, you might get a gentleman, or you might get a strong personality with leadership ambitions.
- Hens can be stubborn. During season itโ€™s often 2 weeks laying, 2 weeks broody jail, repeat cycle.

๐Ÿ‘Œ Verdict
A stylish, efficient, and slightly chaotic egg machine that delivers impressive white eggs with minimal feed. Perfect for keepers who want productivity with personality โ€” just donโ€™t expect them to sit still, stay contained, or follow instructions without negotiation.

hatching eggs. Letโ€™s separate the fact from the fiction in the poultry world! ๐Ÿงฌ
โ€‹
๐Ÿ“ฆ Myth 1: Posted eggs must "rest" to "heal."
FACT: No amount of "resting" can heal damaged internal structures (like detached air cells or ruptured membranes) caused by postal shock. "Resting" only makes the egg a day older, which decreases hatch probability. We set our posted eggs immediately on a stable turner.
โ€‹
๐Ÿฅš Myth 2: You can tell s*x by egg shape.
FACT: Egg shape is determined by breed genetics and individual hen anatomy. It has absolutely zero correlation to the s*x of the chick. (See comment)

โ€‹๐ŸŒก๏ธ Myth 3: Incubation temperature manipulates s*x.
FACT: Chickens are birds, not temperature-dependent reptiles (like turtles or alligators). A chickโ€™s s*x is already determined genetically before the shell is even formed inside the hen. The only result of incorrect incubation temperature is a weak hatch, late hatch, or no-hatch at all.
โ€‹
๐Ÿงฝ Myth 4: Porous eggs never hatch.
FACT: YES, if the porosity is due to hen nutrition issues (thin shells). These introduce bacteria and lose moisture too fast. NO, as sometimes shells just become very porous due to external pressure/temperature changes (during transit). These can still develop just fine and hatch healthy chicks. Based on our observations in the past years certain breeds and specific lineages tend to produce more porous eggs than others regardless of nutrition, yet the chicks hatch just fine.

๐Ÿ“ Myth 5: Egg size tells you the henโ€™s age.
FACT: While older hens generally lay larger eggs than pullets, this isnโ€™t a rule. Individual genetics and lineage matter more. The same hen will produce different size eggs. We have also noticed in some cases, egg size decreases naturally towards the end of season.

โ€‹๐ŸŽจ Myth 6: A henโ€™s egg color is permanent.
FACT: Age, nutrition, stress, time of day, and how long the egg was in the "pigment gland" all affect the shade of the bloom and shell. The same hen can produce different shades.
