Did you know thousands of lost pets are unable to reunite with their families simply because their microchip details are outdated?

A microchip is only helpful if the contact information linked to it is current. We often see cases where pets are scanned, but owners can’t be contacted because phone numbers, addresses, or ownership details haven’t been updated.

If your pet went missing today, would your details still be correct? Taking a few minutes to check your pet’s microchip information could make all the difference in helping them get home safely.

You can check your pet’s details online at petaddress.com.au, or visit Lithgow Veterinary Hospital, and our team can help scan your pet’s microchip and guide you through the process.

Cats are incredibly good at concealing discomfort, which means it’s up to us to notice the subtle signs.

Keep an eye out for these clues:

❗Poor Grooming: A messy coat may mean it’s uncomfortable for them to reach certain areas.
❗Litter Box Changes: Avoiding or missing the box can indicate joint or mobility issues.
❗Increased Hiding: Spending more time alone can be a sign of stress or discomfort.
❗Avoiding Heights: Reluctance to jump can point to sore joints.
❗Facial Expression Changes: A withdrawn or tense look can indicate pain.

If something doesn’t seem right, it’s always worth getting checked.

💬 Share this with a cat-loving friend, you might help them spot an early sign.

Noticing your dog slowing down on colder days? 🐾

It’s easy to assume stiffness is just part of ageing, but it could be a sign of arthritis. Many dogs hide discomfort, so the signs are often subtle, like stiffness after resting, reluctance to jump, or changes in behaviour.

Cooler weather can also make joint discomfort more noticeable, affecting your dog’s mobility and comfort.

At Lithgow Veterinary Hospital, we’re here to help with personalised care and support for your dog’s joint health.

We are very excited to announce that we are now stockists of PRIME 100 (rolls, dry and slow cooked boxes) and we even have the very elusive crocodile rolls in stock. This means that you can get high quality food with high quality nutritional advice all in the one place now with highly trained nursing and veterinary staff that understand the product and your pets needs.
As many of my regular clients know I have been on quite the journey with my boxer Sophie who has had inflammatory bowel disease all her life. The struggle has been to get her high quality food that did not upset her tummy, you could get in lithgow, that I didn’t have to order online (and it did not arrive on time) and that she did not get bored of.
Prime 100 has been that shining light that has allowed her to eat many novel proteins that she is thriving on.
We also stock the more traditional protein foods of prime 100 as we believe that they are a superior food for all dogs. So whether it’s a novel protein for gut or skin allergies you are looking for or just a great high protein diet for your pet with many options available - prime 100 is for you.
We will also be stocking other similar quality high protein diets and hypoallergenic diets such as lyka/tyga, frontier pets, ziwipeak and five hounds as I continue my journey with my pets and their nutritional needs. Looking forward to seeing you soon.

If your dog is bursting with energy at home, there are plenty of ways to keep them entertained, no outdoor walk needed!

Did you know? Mental stimulation can tire your dog out just as much as physical exercise.

Try these 3 simple indoor activities:
1️⃣ Treat Puzzle Game: Use a muffin tray + tennis balls to create an easy DIY brain teaser.
2️⃣ Hide & Seek Treats: Scatter treats around the house and let your dog sniff them out.
3️⃣ Indoor Recall Game: Use a hallway or open space to call your dog back and forth for rewards.

Which game will your dog love most? Let us know in the comments!

Autumn brings an increase in wild mushroom growth across the Lithgow region, especially after rain. While only some mushrooms are poisonous, any suspected ingestion should always be taken seriously.

Wild mushrooms can cause anything from vomiting and diarrhoea to weakness, tremors, seizures, and, in severe cases, life-threatening illness.

If you think your dog may have eaten a wild mushroom, do not wait for symptoms to appear. Some toxins act slowly, and serious internal damage can occur before your dog looks unwell.

To help reduce the risk:
🍄 Check your garden regularly for wild mushrooms
🍄 Keep dogs on lead in unfamiliar or bushy areas
🍄 Be extra cautious after rain
🍄 Seek veterinary care straight away if ingestion is suspected

If possible, bring a sample of the mushroom with you, using gloves to collect it safely. If your dog has eaten a wild mushroom, contact your vet immediately.

If you have friends or family with dogs, feel free to share this post with them too.

If your dog is dragging their bottom across the floor, it might look funny, but it’s usually a sign that something’s not quite right. The most common cause is a**l gland issues, but it can also be linked to worms, allergies, or even simple grooming and hygiene concerns.

While a one-off scoot isn’t always something to worry about, frequent scooting, a strong fishy smell, licking, or signs of discomfort are worth getting checked.

If you’re unsure what’s causing it, it’s always best to have your dog assessed so we can keep them comfortable and healthy 💙
