Breathing laboured? Rapid panting? Hot? If the bird is panting rapidly and shallowly and has its wings held out from its body and its feathers flat onto its body it is probably too hot, and/or physically exhausted after strenuous exercise, struggle or convulsions. Antibiotics are often misused when trying to prevent and treat diseases of birds. It is important to first determine that a bacterial infection is a significant part of the disease process, and then to determine what sort of infection it is,
and which antibiotics we also kill many of the helpful normal bacteria and we usually suppress the birds immune systems. Often there are better methods of management. When your bird is sick, your bird is sleepy and listless during the day, fluffed up and standing on 2 legs while fluffing up, not 'talking'.Laboured breathing and/or shortness of breath, mouth breathing. tail bobbing and arcing. (where the tip of tail moves through a wide arc), wheezing, coughing. blocked nostril. When your bird has become confident, start curling up a finger while eating to stroke it's head or chest. Most pet birds really enjoy being "preened" using the tip of one finger or your finger nail gently against the direction of the feathers around the head, ears and eyes.
