Melbourne Cup Public Holiday 🏇🏆

As the Melbourne Cup Day Public holiday approaches, we would like to ensure our clients have adequate time to prepare for our irregular clinic opening hours.

Our clinics will be available as usual on the weekend preceding the public holiday (1st & 2nd Nov) with small animal after hours offered from Leongatha and Wonthaggi. All of our clinics will also be open as usual on Monday 3rd November.

For the Cup Day Public Holiday our vets will be available for EMERGENCIES ONLY from 5:30pm Monday 3rd November to 8:30am Wednesday 5th November. An after hours fee applies to all consultations seen during this period.

All small animal emergencies will be seen at our LEONGATHA clinic (32 Anderson St, Leongatha) on the Melbourne Cup Day Public Holiday. If you have a small animal emergency, please call 5630 8050 (Bass Coast area) or 5662 2818 (South Gippsland area).

If you have an equine or large animal emergency, please call 5662 2818.

There will be no clinics open for medication ordering/collection on the public holiday. If your pets or livestock require ongoing medications, please check that you have a sufficient supply to get you through this period.

For many people, the Melbourne Cup Holiday is treated as a long weekend. If you plan to travel over this period, now is the time to ensure your pet is up to date with vaccination and are current on their flea, tick and worming prevention.

We wish all our clients and their animals a safe and enjoyable Melbourne Cup Day.

Fleas are pesky parasites that jump from one host to the other. Once infested, some pets can suffer from severe itching all over their body, even if they’ve only got one flea. Flea bites can lead to inflammation, severe itching, and even substantial fur loss. Flea eggs dislodge from our pets and into their environment which can make treating a flea burden a long and drawn-out process.

Did you know?! 🦷 A horse’s teeth continuously erupt throughout their life! Unlike humans, horses are born with a limited amount of tooth material that slowly pushes out over time to compensate for the natural wear caused by constant grazing and chewing rough forage.

However, this wear isn’t always even, and within their domesticated environments they do not consume enough roughage to maintain their own teeth.
Sharp points, hooks, or waves can develop, leading to discomfort, difficulty chewing, and even behavioral issues. That’s why regular dental maintenance is essential.

We recommend having your horse’s teeth checked and floated at least once every 12 months, sometimes more often if remedial work is required, to maintain proper alignment, prevent problems, and ensure your horse stays comfortable and healthy.

Our Equine vet team offer routine and remedial dentistry under standing sedation, ensuring comfort and thoroughness for your horse. We can come to you, or alternatively we are fully equipped in the clinic with an equine crush. We can also offer diagnostics such as X-ray and extractions. 🐎✨
