❓Do your young stock need a spring drench?❓

Strategic drenching of cattle will reduce the risk of developing drench resistance and greatly reduce the number of times stock need drenching. Both spring and autumn calves and heifers should have had a winter drench in May / June but may need a strategic drench in August / September if worm pick up has been high - but only if they are showing signs of scouring or weight loss and have elevated faecal egg counts (FEC).

As there are many causes of scouring and weight loss in young stock, getting a FEC done before you do spring drench is sensible. Simply drop a pooled faecal sample (5 – 6 g of manure from 5 – 10 animals mixed in a single bag) into the clinic and you will have a result in a few hours.

We always recommend dual active drenches to minimise the risk of the emergence of resistant worms with the best option in young stock often being Dectomax V (Dormoectin and Levamisole).

If you have cattle in a liver fluke area – a fluke drench in August or September is essential to remove any remaining adult fluke before summer. The choice of fluke drench will depend on the type of stock (dairy vs beef), resistance issues and handling facilities – have a chat to one of our vets if you are unsure about your options.

Pick up a Dectomax Victory Pack (6 x 500 ml Dectomax V + Gun) for the special price of $900 (inc GST) during August and September.

💡 Did you know 90% of heifers born with a bull twin are likely infertile?

It's called freemartinism - a fascinating (and frustrating) reproductive condition with big implications for breeders.

👀 Affected heifers may look normal, but a hidden mix of male & female DNA could render them sterile.

🧬 Diagnosis isn’t always obvious - some need blood tests to confirm.

💡 And here's the kicker: not all are infertile... so don’t write off that twin heifer just yet.

🔍 Learn how to spot the signs and when testing is worth it by reading the full article.

🐮 Antibiotic Dry Cow and Teat Sealant Withhold Periods 🐮

With spring calving upon us already, it’s a good opportunity to review the withhold periods for antibiotic dry cow products and teat sealants – some of which can be a bit confusing.

Perhaps the most misunderstood withhold statement is “Colostrum or milk from treated cows MUST NOT BE USED for human consumption for 96 hours (8 milkings) after calving”. While this seems simple enough, both the 96 hours and 8 milkings withhold periods must be satisfied before a cow’s milk is suitable for human consumption.

This can cause issues in several situations:

• Milking frequency – once a day vs twice a day vs three times a day?
• Actual timing of calving relative to milking time – did the cow calve after morning milking and only get milked once on that first day?
• Was the calf left on the cow for a couple of days?

For a more detailed explanation of this withhold period and the many others specified by manufactures for antibiotic dry cow and teat sealants, check out the latest blog on our website.

🚨 1 in 5 Bulls Are Sub-Fertile – and many producers don’t even know it.

When it comes to breeding, bull fertility isn’t something you want to leave to chance. A Bull Breeding Soundness Evaluation (BSE) is your insurance policy for calving success, yet it's often overlooked.

✅ Avoid the cost of failed matings
✅ Identify sub-fertile bulls before they cost you
✅ Ensure bulls are fit for purpose - physically, reproductively, and behaviourally

A recent study in southern Australia found 20% of bulls failed pre-mating soundness exams, with age and joint issues being key risk factors. The message is clear: test before you trust.

Flexible Payment Options* for Your Peace of Mind 📲

At GVG, we understand that caring for your animals is a top priority, and sometimes unexpected veterinary expenses can be stressful. That’s why we offer flexible payment options to help make quality veterinary care more accessible. Whether it's routine checkups or emergency treatments, we’re here to support you with our two convenient options, via VetPay and afterpay.

VetPay is a payment plan system that allows animal owners to spread the cost of veterinary treatments over time through regular, scheduled instalments.

Afterpay is a service that allows users to make purchases and pay for them in instalments, typically over a period of several weeks.

Let us help you focus on what matters most: your animal's health and well-being. Reach out today to learn more.

🔹 *Please note, to utilise Vetpay or afterpay, clients must apply directly with them, and have credit approved prior to booking an appointment. Consultations must be paid for at the time of appointment, unless utilising Vetpay or afterpay.

🔹 A 10% deposit and a $50 admin fee must be paid at the time of the consultation if using VetPay

If you would like to utilise Vetpay or afterpay, please let our team know in advance, so we can guide you to the correct avenue to apply for these services.

The 4 Q’s of Colostrum Management – because your calves deserve to thrive, not just survive 🐮

With zero antibody transfer in utero, everything rides on those first hours of life. Get it right, and you set calves up for a lifetime of health and productivity.

Here’s how to master the 4 Q’s of Colostrum Management:
⠀⠀
📌 Quality – Measure with a Brix refractometer. Aim for >22%
📌 Quickly – Harvest colostrum ASAP after calving. Every hour counts.
📌 Quantity – Feed 2L in the first 2 hours. 2L more before 12 hours.
📌 sQueaky Clean – Clean cows, clean gear, clean environment.
⠀⠀
👉 Now you can test blood IgG on-farm in 10 minutes with the ImmunIGY rapid test kit. Just a single drop of blood from the nose and in 10 minutes you will know if a calf has absorbed enough antibodies to survive or thrive.
⠀⠀
The window to set up a lifetime of productivity is less than one day. Don’t miss it! To read the full article on the benefits of good colostrum management and the positive impact ImmunIGY can have on your herd, click the link below.

🐮 New Calf IgG Test Brings Colostrum Success into Clear Focus 🐮

Bimeda have recently released their ImmunIGY rapid on farm test kits for IgG determination in calves.

IgG concentration in new born calves is the key measure of the efficiency of your colostrum management program and is highly correlated with calf disease prevalence (scours, pneumonia, joint ill, navel ill), mortality, pre weaning growth rates and even first and second lactation milk yield.

The new on-farm test kit means IgG testing of all calves is now realistic and allows for identification of calves with low levels of antibodies and early preventative treatment for a whole range of calf diseases.
