Our aim is to ensure that your dogs enjoy their stay with us. All dogs are walked at least once a day in addition they have the opportunity to play in the enclosure. As we are on 10 acres the dogs love nothing more than go for a walk to sniff out what has been happening during the night. Launch of the Don Dunstan Research Network
5.30pm Wednesday 27 March 2024 | Adelaide Health and Medical Sciences Building Lecture Theatre, North Terrace
A new policy research network, honouring the legacy of the late Don Dunstan AC QC, has been established to drive public debate and research on fairness and equality in our political, economic and social systems, and will be launched officially in Adelaide on 27 March 2024.

The Don Dunstan Research Network (DDRN) is a joint initiative by the Australian Fabians and the Don Dunstan Foundation and is based on a shared core belief that political and social stability and progress must be based on principles of fairness, equality, trust and respect.

The DDRN launch is a free event on 27 March and will feature keynote speakers Brian Donaghy and John Töns exploring the idea of a Universal Basic Income as one way to address fairness and equality in our society. The public lecture will also be livestreamed as a webinar and individuals and organisations encouraged to attend in person, or orgnaise a group to watch the livestream together, to learn more about the topic and how to host their own DDRN conversations as part of the Another World is Possible campaign.

South Australia is slowly but surely on the move. Even if you are still wary about travelling too far from home - your dogs would still appreciate a mini break. Lots of places to explore in the Adelaide Hills - drop the dog off and drive down to Mt Torrens to a lovely country pub. From there take the back roads to Mannum and Swan Reach. Stay overnight before slowly winding your way back to pick up the dog. You will be mentally refreshed but so will your best friend!

We urge all dog owners to read the article attached to this post. It concerns the potentially fatal disease canine ehrlichiosis. We have not paid much attention to diseases spread by ticks - used to be a problem for Northern Australia but seemingly no longer; ticks can now survive down South and so your pet is at risk. It is can be controlled and is not contagious, proper flea and tick treatment should be enough. If you have any doubt contact your vet. Both our cleaning regime and land management should be sufficient to keep ticks at bay but we will expect all owners to have flea and tick management plan in place for their dogs.

More than 300 dogs in WA and the NT have tested positive to canine ehrlichiosis, a potentially fatal disease transmitted by ticks.

Although we came through the bushfire unscathed the same cannot be said for our telephone service. Since December 20 our landline has been largely out of action.
Earlier this week we decided to give up on ever getting our landline back. Of course irony of ironies this was also the week that the landline finally came good but by now it is too late. We have decided to have a dedicated mobile for all of our bookings: 0401 047 787. Of course we will not always be able to answer the phone, rather than leave a message text us and we will get back to you as soon as we are able.
Both of us will also have our mobiles with us when delivering or picking up dogs.
If you need to contact us urgently you can either ring:
Susan on 0421 087 776
or
John on 0419 841 040
We will not always hear you but we will check our phones regularly.
As we are working from a number of contact lists you may get this email more than once, our apologies for that - hopefully once we are through the covid 19 crisis life can get back to normal.

So for the few people who will still need our services - camping in the Flinders? Deep Creek? We are here to look after your dogs.

Telstra problems
Since the bushfires we have been having problems with our phone. It seems that our landline has not been working. So if you need to get in touch text John's mobile: 0419 841 040 - we will then get back to you.

Marley's Bushfire Relief Fundraiser!
Hi to all my fellow pets. Friday was pretty scary. John and Susan bundled all of us into their vehicles and took us to somewhere safe - no smoke, no fire!
BUT
When we were all settled in we discovered that one of their neighbours was not so lucky. Steven Boyle is a local farmer - he suffered burns to fifty percent of his body and looks like it will be some months before he can get back to work. Meanwhile he has a wife and three kids but as the sole breadwinner they will be doing it tough.
So here is a call out to all you pets - I have convinced my owners to kick in $50 to start off a fund raiser.
Convince your owners to also make a donation - they can either use the EFT details that John and Susan have given to your owners (make sure it is marked Steven Boyle!) Or send your cheques direct to : Steven Boyle Bushfire Fund c/- PO Lenswood 5240.
Make sure that you post on here your name and breed and the amount you donated. Come on fellow Airedales - you know we are outnumbered by the Labradors and Retrievers but this is our challenge!

Dear All
By now you will be aware of the bushfires in our neighbourhood. We managed to evacuate all the dogs on Friday to the Hanhdorf Animal Shelter and spent the day waiting to see what happened.
Came back on Saturday - brought the dogs back and waited for the power to be turned back on. However, it is looking that this may take some time (weeks even) Ther substation that serves us is in the middle of the fireground and that fire ground is still far from safe.
We were very lucky - the edge of the fire came within about 500 meters of our boundary but many of our friends and neighbours were not - one was diagnosed with cancer, his employers business was destroyed and his house was burnt down; the sort trifecta no-one wants.
So if you hold a booking please text John on 0419841040. and either confirm or cancel. We would strongly advise to cancel (we will give a full refund) for the situation is still unpredictable - a change of wind could send the fire on to our property.
We cannot be too upset - we have managed to keep all the boarders safe (we certainly did not want a repeat of what happened during the Sampson Flat bushfire when some fifty or so dogs died in the boarding kennel) Whilst we have been inconvenienced that is minor compared to my neighbours at least five have lost everything.
If you text us on 0419841040 we will try and respond quickly.
Meanwhile can I urge all of you to make a donation to the local bushfire appeal?
I do not know when I can get back to check Facebook but wish all of you a happy and safe 2020 - and of course many thanks to all who have already sent messages of support.

Cat owners please note. The spring storm last year destroyed our cattery. Fortunately no cats were injured or lost BUT it has meant that we will no longer be able to accommodate cats. Should this change then we will post here advising you that the cattery is yet again open for business but for the present we are sorry to say that we can no longer accommodate cats.

For those of you delivering dogs be mindful of the poultry at the top of the driveway. Currently you will see about ten ducklings, a white duck limping along (thanks to a fox) and a number of chooks having dust baths on the side of the track. So take it easy coming down and make sure your dog is secured inside your vehicle - some can get rather excited when they see all these animals. (I suppose for them it must be like driving through a safari park!)

For many of our boarders the surrounding country side is filled with wonder. We now have a small mob of kangaroos that have made our paddocks home. Most dogs have never seen a roo, or for that matter a koala so they get quite excited when they see them. Then in the mornings on their early morning walks they can very often sniff out the overnight carnage that the foxes have inflicted as well as the fresh droppings from possums, koalas and the roos. I guess for most it makes a welcome change from sniffing the hydrocarbons that dominate the urban environment.

Healthy dogs!
People are constantly on the look out for alternative treatments for their pets. One of our customers was faced with a hefty bill for a knee reconstruction for his dog. When he worked at the zoo he had successfully used acupuncture for some Koalas so he tried it for Bella - no expensive surgery, no weeks with Bella walking around with a bucket in her head. Instead a course of several treatments with acupuncture seems to have done the trick.
Well worth considering if you have a pet that needs it : http://www.equinoxbalance.com.au
https://www.facebook.com/EquinoxBalance/
Although both her website and facebook are focussed on horses - she does dogs as well.
Other owners have told me about using a chiropractor for their dogs and horses - again worth trawling the net to look at a range of remedies.

Spring has sprung. At last count there were 10 magpie nesting around the property - as well as that a couple of ducks have returned to nest in one of the gums near the dam. Much to the consternation of many of our borders there are a couple of weird looking large hopping creatures in the paddock. At least there is plenty for them to sniff.
