Tonight I got to deliver some educational material about canine behavioural management - in a collaborative program with The Dog Education Centre.

I’m very privileged to have the amazing and her team standing with me and the AAH team on this journey. I’ve got a lot of respect for this lady, her skills, passion and drive.

I’m really looking forward to this journey and the good we will be able to do for dogs, owners and the greater Albury Wodonga community.

🌟 Parvovirus 🌟

All the usual treatment advice goes without saying, but here’s my 2 clinical pearls of wisdom:

👩🏻‍⚕️ early enteral nutrition: seems like a futile and pointless exercise in the beginning. Often with multiple anti-nausea medications on board (Prevomax and Metomide) it’s often a case of “for every 2 ml that goes in, 1ml comes up”. My advice - keep going! That means 1 ml will stay down, and those enterocytes need that nutrition.

👩🏻‍⚕️ Caniplas - use of this has 2 benefits… improving albumin and globulin levels and it has high levels of circulating antibodies against parvovirus, as it is taken from hyper-immunised animals. Helping to fight the infection.

Finally - I take my hat off to the nurses who look after these puppies as it’s hard work, frustrating and arguably one of the most intimate nursing situations in the vet industry. Once a patient is in isolation - that nurse is that patients everything.

This week is the beginning of something exciting! I’m entering into business ownership with the amazing hospital I have been working at.

Last week I drove up to Sydney for the Independent Vets of Australia] conference to start my learning journey as a business owner!

My key take home messages that resonated with me:
✅ I cannot do everything so build a support team around me in the workplace (delegate)
✅ Delegation fills other peoples cups and allows autonomy
✅ Utilise the amazing resources available - the IVA parters are incredible and I have a list of a few I’m going to contact to workshop ideas
✅ Keep connecting - I’ll aim to continue to engage with colleagues to help benchmark my progress

Just wow!

🌟 What’s in a word 🌟

Ever wondered about the feelings generated from a single word?

How does the word Staff feel to you?

Ok I’m sure you’ve got some thoughts going through your head…

Now how about the word Team…

I always try to avoid the word staff when talking about employees…. It implies ‘working for’

As a manager I always use the word Team. Here’s why:

Team member is inclusive, diplomatic, valued, supported and connected - ie my success and their success are directly linked!

Never be afraid to celebrate in others success and watch them grow. Be the mentor you always wished you had!

🌟 Trust = growth 🌟

I cannot say this enough - if you take the time to teach, and support then it is absolutely critical that the next thing you must do is to step back and allow that person complete control over their choices.

They know that I’m here if they need help, but they also know I have trust that they can do the job.

That is very empowering!

This photo is our Nurse Frankie (left) who was our trainee just 12 months ago! And she is now teaching and passing in her knowledge to Nurse Sarah, who is one of our current trainees.

It makes me so proud to think I contributed to this succession and the joy they experience in their day to day job.

Trust is not always ‘natural’ - some people might be inclined to micromanage - but micromanaging will only suppress others and create more work for you!

🌟 Medical management of heart failure 🌟
As vets we often enjoy surgery or medicine. I personally enjoy both but have such a love for medicine. I love that I can identify the early stages of disease, such as a heart murmur… put in place medical management to extend patient life.
I also love that I can educate owners to be able to detect subtle changes, and have them come back to me, to allow me to adjust, add in or reassess my plan.
TRUST is the foundation of all relationships.
Veterinary medicine is a 3 way relationship. My role is to interpret what’s going on with the patient, advocate for the best treatment plan and build a relationship based on trust with the owner - so they truely know and feel that we are working together for the best interest of their pet.
Medical management for this girl Mia, saw her come back from a bad decline with congestive heart failure to being managed well and being able to enjoy a good quality of life.
That’s more time for the family together with their precious baby.
That is what gets me out of bed everyday 💕

🌟 ISFM Cat friendly clinic 🌟
Super proud to be part of our hospital being accredited by as a Cat Friendly Clinic.
We have finished the hospital renovations and have an amazing set up. We are commencing our feline focus and training to ensure we are always ‘thinking cat’.
The cats are already so much easier to handle in this environment and it’s probably the most peaceful area in the whole hospital 😆😍
It’s been a great process to go through our hospital and fine tune things - wonderful program 👍🏻

🌟 Ending the week in a high 🌟
As I hang my stethoscope up for a break to focus on family, I had a wonderful day today.
I helped ease a patients pain with euthanasia, I got to be an ophthalmologist, a dermatologist, an ear doctor, a phlebotomist, a medical consultant, amongst other things….
As practice manager I got to chair and have a really productive and positive meeting with my Vet colleagues - I absolutely love having a Team that supports a common goal and everyone’s ideas and contributions are valued.
And to top it off, I was already on a high having received news that a patient of mine had a massive dramatic improvement based on the advice and treatment plan I started yesterday - the difference between euthanasia today and extending life! 😃 - but then to top it off - I also unexpectedly received these flowers as a token of appreciation from the client.
In the Vet industry there are days that are a mixture of negative emotions such as stressful, chaotic, pressured, sad, depressing… but it’s days like today that resonate and I take the time to stop and soak it all in.
I LOVE my job, and love seeing the positive impact I can have on the people and patients around me.
Thank you to the people around me who support me - and thank you to my Team for trusting my leadership 🛳

🌟 Take time for you 🌟
We just had the nationally recognised day here in Australia. Where we make an effort to start a conversation with friends, family and colleagues (or even a stranger?) to check in and offer a supportive ear.
It’s also a timely reminder to stop and appreciate the beautiful things in life - and be appreciative and show gratitude for the world we live in.
is hectic, stressful, chaotic at times but also rewarding, challenging, uplifting, satisfying and gives us a sense of purpose.
Outside of work it is equally important to stop and smell the roses. For me - I love being in the garden and here it’s just changed seasons to spring and watching Mother Nature work seemlessly is a real beauty.
These ornamental pear trees stood naked in my back yard for 3 months, and just a few short weeks ago awoke and produced flowers. As if on cue - these bees have arrived to pollinate and so the circle of life goes.
Can you hear the bees? 🐝 🌸

🌟 Love my support Team 🌟 .
Could never get through the work load we do without our nurses!
There’s so many things that I enjoy about my job but dentistry is up there on the list!
Top tips for dentistry:
✅ Be patient
✅ Good things come to those who wait
✅ Did I mention patience?
🤣 You cannot perform extraction without doing the preparation leading into it well and there’s NO cutting corners 👍🏻
Plan out your extraction, take the time to do dental X-rays, learn your dental chart numbering and get yourself a nurse who is equally as passionate about oral hygiene as you are! 🦷

🌟 Positivity 🌟
Our Clinic celebrates . We dedicate the month to the social media platform to raise awareness of patients who attend the clinic, some hospital stories, local businesses involved in the industry and support services AND we decided what the heck - we would get our groove on with the aim to put a smile on someone’s face.
Day in an out it’s easy to get into a groove and forget to stop and enjoy yourself and have a laugh along the way! Well nup - not my philosophy.
I try to install some humour and laughter into the Team and the day where ever I can and I LOVE that my Team got onboard to do a tik-tok style video.
Prime news picked it up tonight - it makes my day to know that we are creativity positivity.
Positivity in the face of adversity.
Well done Team ⭐️
