Northern Machinery Pty Ltd is located in Laura, SA and provides agricultural and heavy vehicle maintenance, repairs and spare parts, as well as a variety of rural supplies.
We currently have an employment opportunity for a trade qualified Heavy Diesel Mechanic to join our workshop team.
In your new position you will be reporting to the Workshop Manager and will be responsible for maintaining, diagnosing and repairing mechanical and electrical issues in diesel motors, heavy vehicle transmissions, suspension, steering and brake systems on a variety of diesel-powered vehicles including trucks, tractors and other heavy vehicles.
You will also be required to perform routine servicing, chassis/undercarriage repair, and troubleshoot systems like air brakes and hydraulics systems.
Tasks
Trucks
• Carry out repairs to chassis/undercarriage, and troubleshoot systems like air brakes and hydraulics systems
• Detect and diagnose faults in engines, mechanical parts and electrical systems
• Perform routine servicing and repairs as per schedules
• Dismantle and remove engine assemblies, transmissions, steering mechanisms and other components, and checks parts
• Repair and replace worn and defective parts and reassemble mechanical components, and refer to service manuals as needed
• Reassemble engines and parts after being repaired
• Test and adjust mechanical parts after being repaired for proper performance
• Diagnose and test parts with the assistance of computers
• May inspect vehicles to ascertain roadworthiness or detail work required to achieve roadworthiness
Trailers
• Conduct thorough inspections of brakes, tires, suspension, lights, electrical systems, and overall structural integrity of truck trailers
• Carry out repairs to chassis/undercarriage, and troubleshoot systems like air brakes and hydraulics systems
• Perform routine servicing and repairs as per schedules
• Perform preventative maintenance, repair or replace worn/damaged parts (brakes, air lines, axles, flooring)
• Troubleshoot and diagnose mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical system failures
• Accurately record all maintenance and repair work performed
• Ensure all trailers meet roadworthiness standards
Responsibilities
• Maintain, repair and service diesel vehicles, engines, trailers, and other equipment in line with relevant transport legislation and standards
• Run and analyse diagnostic tests on vehicle engines
• Use specialised tools and diagnostic equipment to troubleshoot complex problems and make accurate repairs
• Stay updated with industry trends, technological advancements, and manufacturer recommendations for diesel engines and equipment.
• Communicate effectively with supervisors, coworkers, and clients to provide updates on repair progress or any potential issues
• Analyse drawings to determine the specifications of the components to be constructed
• Measure parts to ascertain the extent of the damage and wear and tear and then repair or replace the parts as necessary
• Collaborate with other mechanics and technicians to ensure efficient workflow and timely completion of projects

• Good management skills and the ability to work with minimal supervision and work in a team environment
• Reliable and has good communication skills
• Extensive knowledge of diesel engine repair techniques, tools, and diagnostic equipment
• Proficient in reading and interpreting technical manuals, diagrams, and schematics
• Excellent attention to detail and time management skills
• Physical stamina and dexterity to handle physical tasks, including lifting heavy equipment and working in tight spaces
• Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record
The candidate we are looking for will have:
• Trade qualifications
• Experience in transport
• Experience with major engine brands (i.e. Cummins, CAT etc) & trailers
• Proven competence as a Workshop Mechanic
• HR Licence
• Sound computer skills
• Demonstrate safe & productive work practices
• Good problem solving and planning skills
This will be a permanent, full-time position, with a probationary period of 3 months.
A vehicle will be provided and accommodation is also available, if required.
Pay rate will be negotiated, based on skill set and performance of applicant.
