Here is another common denomenator...my poodles wont eat Royal Canine any more and seen SO MANY DOGS WITH ALLEGIES AND DIGESTION ISSUES...massive red flag not just to our own food but our fur kids food.....I am no longer feeding Royal Canine but will be applicable to all HIGH end dog kibbles Hills Science, Black Hawk etc...so if your dog is not eating the KIBBLE listen ...Here is a breakdown of the changes and potential risks to your dog:
1. Ingredient Changes for Lower Carbon Footprint
Replacement of Red Meat: Beef and lamb have the highest environmental impact; they are being replaced by poultry, white fish, or plant-based proteins.
Increased Use of By-Products: Instead of "prime cuts" (steak, chicken breast), more sustainable formulas use nutritious offal and carcass parts that humans do not consume.
Plant-Based Proteins: Ingredients like soy, pea protein, potato protein, and nutritional yeast are becoming more common.
Novel Proteins: The use of insect-based protein (e.g., black soldier fly larvae) is increasing as a highly sustainable option.
"Upcycled" Ingredients: Greater use of rejected agricultural produce, such as imperfect veggies or broken rice.
2. Dangers and Potential Risks to Your Dog
Nutrient Deficiencies (Protein/Amino Acids): Plant-based proteins may lack the full spectrum of essential amino acids (like taurine or L-carnitine) that dogs need for heart and muscle health. Note: Properly formulated, commercial vegan diets are generally safe, but this is a risk if not balanced correctly.
High Carbohydrate Load & Insulin Spikes: To replace meat, lower-carbon foods often increase starch content (rice, potatoes, grains). High carbohydrate diets can cause blood sugar spikes, leading to obesity, diabetes, and lethargy.
Digestive Issues: High levels of plant-based ingredients or fiber may cause gas, diarrhea, or changes in gut bacteria.
Reduced Nutrient Bioavailability: Nutrients in plant-based ingredients can be harder for dogs to digest and absorb compared to animal proteins, meaning they may not get the nutrition they need, even if the analysis looks good on paper.
Allergic Reactions: Switching to new protein sources (like soy or insect protein) can trigger allergies in dogs with sensitivities.
