👀 Just because your dog can see you doesn't mean they need access to you all the time.
Teaching independence is an important life skill for dogs. There will inevitably be times when they need to be left alone, so helping them feel comfortable and confident on their own can make a huge difference to their wellbeing.
As many of you know, we have recently moved house. I'm currently helping my own dogs learn that this new environment is a safe and relaxing place to be. One of the ways I do this is by practising short periods of independence while I'm still at home. This allows me to monitor how they're coping and move in and out of their sight without making it a big deal.
Today, both dogs enjoyed a chew and some enrichment in their Topplers, then chose to settle and relax on their own. I've also put up a partition between them so neither feels the need to guard their chew. Teaching independence from each other is just as important as teaching independence from us.
Remember, independence isn't about leaving dogs to "just cope"—it's about gradually building confidence and helping them feel safe when they are alone.
📣📣Please note my barrier set up pictured would not be safe or suitable for many dogs. It’s about working with the dog or dogs in front of you! Some dogs would push through and some dogs would fence run, but for my dogs it is okay. 📣📣
