Jamieson's Working Dogs

Jamieson's Working Dogs Breeding and Training Sheepdogs Specifically for Sheepdog Trialling Please remember, if you have the desire and commitment to succeed it can be done.

A resource site for people interested in caring for, breeding and training sheepdogs specifically to compete in sheepdog trials. I’ve been competing in sheepdog trials in Australia since 1992 and have learnt from some of the best stock handlers and dog trainers in the country over the journey. As a result, I’ve been fortunate enough to develop systems and core beliefs that work effectively for me

and have enabled me to have a reasonable level of success over a long period of time. Some of my successes include qualifying as a member of the country’s top 4 triallers to represent Australia in the Trans-Tasman Test series, the pinnacle of our sport. Many Open trial wins with multiple dogs over a long period of time, in recent years the resume includes winning the Tasmanian “Consistency” dog of the year award, Tasmanian Championship, CopRice Champion of Champions Series and consistently placing in the top 3 at the Australian Championships and Commonwealth Championships with multiple dogs. A key to my success is a desire to continuously learn how to become a better trainer and importantly better understand how to effectively work different types of sheep. This is particularly key to my success as I’m not a farmer or a stock manager, I own a real estate agency and live on a 3-acre block in an urban area and compete in sheepdog trials in my spare time. I know there are a lot of people out there in a similar position to me that have a desire to compete in sheepdog trials but just don’t know where to start. If by sharing my knowledge and successes with people who share the same aspirations to me is helpful, then feel free to follow me on this page and I might be able to help you. Some of the topics I’ll cover here will include;

• Breeding and or selecting pups for the best chance of success on the trial field
• Caring for your dogs, nutrition, health and housing
• Starting pups on the right path
• Training through the various stages from pup to podium
• Having a personal routine designed for ultimate success
• Competing in sheepdog trials and overcoming setbacks
• The mindset required for competition
• Interviews with top sheepdog triallers

Our QLD leg of dog trials is now completed today with the Toobeah trial hosted by Allan Leech and his committee wrapping up. My dogs worked well with Magic falling just one point shy of making the final on 90 and Fran made it in on 91. The sheep were tough in the final and time beat us at the pen and we finished 4th. Fran was happy with her own performance 😀 congrats to Jim O’Connell for winning the Open with his dog River.

Now we head North to the top of QLD before heading to the NT. Next dog trial is late July in WA.

Another trial ticked off the bucket list, the QLD Supreme at Chinchilla. A well run trial, good sheep which were very tricky to work. Overall I’m pleased with my dogs. Toby and Fran both penned, but fell a few points short of the top 15 run off. Moss and Magic both scored 82 and progressed to the run off. Magic run an 81 to make the top 6 final and then put in another consistent 82 to finish in third overall.

Congrats to Scott Stokes and Geoff Gibson who finished first and second respectively. Our next trial is in Toobeah QLD before we head north for a trip across the top end and down the west coast into to Northam WA for the Supreme Aus Champs.

Just an update for those interested in our mainland tour. So far we have travelled from Tas to Qld and competed in three trials. Morven, Charleville and Cunnamulla. While we haven’t won any we have certainly had a great time and seen some amazing country. Never thought I’d see QLD so green, it’s a great season in many areas. The company has been great and the local Queensland Working Sheep Dog Association members have made us very welcome. On the dog front they have mostly travelled well, Fran is in season now which is causing some logistical challenges, but otherwise they’ve been great. We have had a lot of good runs but no great ones yet. Toby made the final at Cunnamulla, but the sheep were too good for us on the day.

Currently we are enjoying some beach time between trials at Bargara, near Bundaberg before we head inland again for the QLD Supreme and Gundawindi trials.

Pictured is our campsite at Cobar on our journey north.

Congratulations toBernard McGlashan for a clean sweep of the two Easter trials on the NE at Pyengana. Tuz won her first Open on Saturday on the Supreme course and then backed it up on the Trans Tasman course on Sunday, well done mate.

My weekend was ok as well finishing 3rd on Saturday with Toby and 2nd and 3rd on Sunday with Magic and Moss in a closely contested final. The big positive for me was consistency from my three dogs over the weekend. Now we prepare for the CopRice Agfest Championships next week. Both Bernard and I appreciate the ongoing support from CopRice which helps our dogs perform at the best.

Enjoyed a weekend of dog trialling in the Fingal Valley this weekend. Happy to say a youngster won his first Open trial, Blyth’s Moss. In the last few trials he’s won the State Novice Championship, Northern Tas Improver Championship and now the CopRice Fingal Open trial. Fingers crossed the good form continues long into the future.

Thanks as always to my personal sponsor CopRice for their continued support of me and sheepdog trialling across Australia.

Over the past two weekends in Tasmania we’ve had two major championships. The first was the State Championships in Bothwell and then the Northern Championships in Exeter. I’ve been preparing two young dogs which are sons of my late dog Steele and entered them in the Novice and Improver dog classes in each championship. Fortunately they worked well and we had a bit of luck on our side and come away with some titles.

Moss: Tasmanian State Novice Champion
Magic: Northern Tas Novice Champion
Moss: Northern Tas Improver Champion
Magic: Runner up Northern Tas Improver
Moss: Northern Tas Open finalist

I’m also very happy to see a great mate Al Hort take out the Northern Tas Open Championship working his dog Lucy, who is also by Steele. It’s humbling to see Steele’s progeny going on to win lots of trials.

As always a big thanks to CopRice for supporting me and sheepdog trials in general.

I haven’t posted for a while, I’ve been busy training the next generation of Steele’s offspring. Unfortunately, I had to say goodbye to Steele himself on Friday after he suffered a medical condition which was terminal. He had a good career in his 9 years on circuit with me and I’ll miss having him beside me.

RIP Steele.
