We realised that after a few years of Pony Privates, it was probably time to properly introduce the faces behind the business — especially since a few clients have accidentally mixed us up along the way (being identical twins apparently doesn’t help 😅).

So hello — we’re Kara and Freya Vasylenko.

With backgrounds in veterinary nursing, animal health science, equestrian coaching, horse training, and equine handling, we created Pony Privates with a strong focus on calm, welfare-focused horse care and low-stress handling.

Kara holds an Honours degree in Animal & Veterinary Bioscience from the University of Sydney and has worked for several years within the veterinary industry as both a small animal and equine nurse. She is currently the Practice Manager of a Sydney veterinary clinic and brings extensive experience in professional animal care and horse handling.

Freya is an EA qualified and insured introductory horse riding coach with extensive experience in horse handling, rider education, and equine management. She is currently continuing her education through Certificate Level 1 and TRT training methods, focusing on calm, welfare-based horse training and communication.

Together, our combined science background, veterinary industry experience, and practical horse knowledge support a thoughtful, horse-first approach tailored to each individual horse.

Thank you to everyone who has supported Pony Privates so far — we’re incredibly grateful for the trust owners place in us and their horses. 🫶

And if you still can’t tell us apart after this post… honestly, fair enough.

🚨 CANBERRA HORSE OWNERS — PLANNING A TRIP YOUR WAY SOON 🚨

📍 Servicing Canberra & surrounding regions

🐎 When was the last time your horse had a proper sheath clean?

Many horses quietly carry large “beans” and built-up grime that can cause discomfort, irritation, swelling, trouble urinating, behavioural changes, and sensitivity under saddle — often without owners realising.

A lot of horses show subtle signs like:
▫️ Tail swishing
▫️ Fussiness when grooming or saddling
▫️ Stretching to urinate
▫️ Dribbling urine
▫️ Kicking at the belly
▫️ General discomfort or grumpiness

‼️ Routine sheath cleaning is an important part of your horse’s health and wellbeing, and we focus on keeping the experience calm, safe, and low-stress for your horse.

🗓 We’re planning a trip to the Canberra region and seeking bookings

🚨 A quick note on cancellations 🚨

We absolutely love being able to offer this service and help keep your horses comfortable and healthy — but we need to have a quick chat about late cancellations.

Last-minute cancellations (especially on the morning of your booking) have a real impact on small businesses like ours. You wouldn’t cancel on your farrier or equine dentist at the last minute — and we ask for the same respect.

With diesel prices through the roof and travel being a big part of what we do, we can’t afford to be driving long distances for bookings that don’t go ahead. It means lost time, lost income, and missed opportunities to help other clients who may have needed that spot.

We genuinely don’t want to introduce cancellation fees or deposits — we’ve always tried to keep things easy and flexible for everyone. But if late cancellations continue, we may have no choice but to implement them to keep the business sustainable.

🙏 Please give us as much notice as possible if you need to reschedule — we really appreciate it.

Thanks so much for supporting a small business 💛

‼️ A very satisfying sheath clean from our Canberra trip over the weekend! 🐴🫘

This impressive “bean” came out of a lovely gelding — and this is only part of it! It was so large it had to be gently broken up to remove it safely.

His owner wasn’t sure we’d even be able to get the job done, as he’s normally quite sensitive and uncertain with new people. But with a calm approach, patience, and taking the extra time he needed, he turned out to be an absolute darling to work with. 💛

Once the pressure was relieved, the change in him was immediate — licking, chewing, and clear signs of relaxation afterwards.

🫘 Why sheath cleaning is important:
• Large beans can cause discomfort and pressure
• Can contribute to difficulty urinating
• May cause behavioural changes or irritability
• Often builds up quietly until it becomes a problem

Many owners don’t realise their horse has one until it’s removed!

✨ Every horse is different, and some simply need a quiet, patient approach and a bit of extra time, which we’re always happy to provide.

Thank you to his owner for trusting Pony Privates with him — it was so rewarding to see the relief afterwards.

📩 Message Pony Privates to book your gelding in

🫘 Yes… this came out of a 33-year-old horse’s sheath 🐴

And yes — the relief afterwards was obvious.

This impressive “bean” was removed from a lovely 33-year-old gelding who had been showing subtle signs of difficulty peeing. Nothing dramatic… just not quite right. After removal, the change in his comfort was evident almost immediately.

This is what’s commonly called a bean — a build-up of sm**ma that forms inside the sheath, often sitting in the urethral fossa. While it can look shocking, it’s incredibly common — and often goes unnoticed until it starts causing discomfort.

❗ Why sheath cleaning matters (even for older horses):
• Beans can cause discomfort, pain, and behavioural changes
• Difficulty urinating or urine dribbling
• Swelling, irritation, or infection
• Girthiness, resistance, or unexplained grumpiness
• Older horses may struggle quietly without obvious signs

Just because they’re seniors doesn’t mean they don’t need attention — in fact, they often need us advocating for their comfort even more 💛

🗓️ Most geldings benefit from a sheath clean 1–2 times per year (individual needs vary).

✨ We provide calm, thorough, non-sedated sheath cleaning as a cost-effective alternative to a vet call-out — suitable for horses that tolerate handling well.

We’re here to service horses of all ages — from youngsters to golden oldies 🐎💛

📩 Message the page to book in or to discuss whether this service is suitable for your horse.

Your horse might not say thank you… but his comfort will show it 😉

🫘 Yes… this came out of a horse’s sheath 🐴

This is what’s commonly called a “bean” — a build-up of sm**ma that can form inside a gelding’s sheath, often sitting in the urethral fossa. While it might look shocking, it’s actually very common and often goes unnoticed until it causes problems.

❗ Why sheath cleaning is important:
• Beans can cause discomfort, pain, and behavioural changes
• Can lead to difficulty urinating or urine dribbling
• May contribute to swelling, infection, or irritation
• Some horses become girthy, resistant, or grumpy without an obvious cause

Many horses don’t show clear signs until the build-up is significant — which is why routine checks matter.

🗓️ Most geldings benefit from a sheath clean 1–2 times per year (individual needs vary).

✨ I offer calm, thorough sheath cleaning as a non-sedated, cost-effective alternative to a vet call-out, ideal for horses that tolerate handling well.

Your horse will thank you — even if he can’t say it 😉🐎

🏇 Performance-Focused Post 🐎
Equissage Therapy for Performance Horses

Equissage therapy is widely used in performance programs to support muscle function, recovery, and overall comfort — helping horses stay consistent in training and competition.

📚 Studies and applied use indicate Equissage therapy may:
✔️ Improve circulation to working muscles
✔️ Reduce post-exercise muscle tightness and soreness
✔️ Assist in quicker recovery between training sessions
✔️ Support range of motion and topline comfort
✔️ Encourage relaxation and mental decompression post-work

By promoting efficient blood and lymphatic flow, Equissage therapy helps the body clear metabolic by-products after exercise — an important factor in managing fatigue and maintaining muscle health.

Commonly used:
• After intense training or competition
• During heavy competition schedules
• For horses prone to muscle tightness
• As part of routine conditioning and recovery

💬 I’m offering access to my Equissage back, handheld and leg set to support horses across all disciplines.

📩 Get in touch to book or discuss which setup best suits your horse.
