KENNEL COUGH NOT JUST A KENNEL THING π₯Ί
There has been an increase in cases of kennel cough across the state, so we wanted to share some important information with our community!
Despite the name, kennel cough doesnβt only come from kennels. Itβs a highly contagious respiratory illness that spreads anywhere dogs come into close contact π³
Kennel cough is most commonly caused by a combination of bacteria and viruses (including Bordetella bronchiseptica), and it spreads easily through airborne droplets and contaminated surfaces!
Common signs to watch for include:
πΎ A dry, hacking or honking cough
πΎ Retching or gagging after coughing
πΎ Nasal discharge
πΎ Lethargy or reduced energy
πΎ Loss of appetite in some dogs
πΎ Puppies or senior dogs may appear more unwell
Some dogs remain bright and active with just a cough, while others, especially puppies, elderly dogs, or immunocompromised pets can develop more serious complications π₯Ί
If your dog develops a cough, please keep them away from other dogs and contact the clinic before coming in so we can help minimise exposure to others!
Vaccination doesnβt guarantee complete protection, but it significantly reduces severity and spread. Many dogs who are vaccinated still may catch kennel cough, however their symptoms are often milder β¨
If youβre unsure about your dogβs vaccination status, or itβs been a while since their last booster, weβre more than happy to help review records and get them back on track!
We are always here to check vaccination histories and discuss appropriate protection for your dog! If you have any concerns, please give us a call on 62279586. Weβre here to help keep your dogs healthy, comfortable, and protected π
