Animal Emergency Hospital Launceston

Animal Emergency Hospital Launceston 24hr veterinary care for the North of Tasmania, Friday evening to Monday morning and Public Holidays

02/04/2026

🐰 Easter Opening Hours Reminder 🐣

We’ll be open continuously from 5:00pm this evening through until 8:00am Tuesday morning, so our team is here all long weekend for any pet emergencies.

🍫 As always over Easter, please keep an eye out for common holiday hazards including chocolate, hot cross buns, fatty leftovers, and decorations.

⚠️ Important dog owners: Tasmania is currently seeing increased cases of Parvovirus statewide.

🐕 If your dog has vomiting, diarrhoea, lethargy, or reduced appetite, please call the clinic on arrival and remain in your car for further instructions from our team.

🚗 Please do not get your dog out of the car or allow them to toilet outside the clinic until a nurse has attended your vehicle.

👩🏽‍⚕️ This allows our nursing team to safely triage your pet and perform immediate testing where needed, while helping protect other patients from potential exposure.

Thank you for helping us keep all pets safe this Easter weekend 💙

Long Weekend PSA for Pet Owners 🐾

The weather might be starting to cool off, but unfortunately snake season isn’t over yet — and this year they’ve been particularly active around Tasmania.

The problem is… dogs often think a snake looks like a very exciting new toy.
The snake, on the other hand, would very much prefer to be left alone.

Unfortunately, that misunderstanding can end badly.

🐍 Snake bites are a veterinary emergency.
Signs can include:
• Sudden weakness or collapse
• Wobbly back legs
• Dilated pupils
• Vomiting
• Tremors or shaking
• Difficulty breathing

Sometimes pets just seem “a bit off” before deteriorating quickly, so if your pet has been exploring long grass or bush areas and isn’t acting like themselves, it’s safest to have them checked.

How to reduce the risk this weekend:
• Keep dogs on leash near bush or long grass
• Avoid letting pets explore wood piles, rock piles or dense vegetation
• Keep yards tidy where possible
• Be extra cautious on bush walks

If you suspect a snake bite, don’t wait to see what happens — seek veterinary care immediately.

✨ We’re here across the long weekend if your pet needs us. We are open now until Tuesday morning at 8am ✨

Stay safe out there 🐶🐱🐍

Long Weekend Pet Safety Reminder 🐾🔥

We’re open across the long weekend, and with hot weather about, here are a few important reminders to help keep your pets safe:

☀️ Heat stress
Signs include excessive panting, drooling, lethargy, vomiting or collapse. If you’re concerned:
✔️ Move your pet to a cool or air‑conditioned space
✔️ Offer small amounts of cool (not icy) water
✔️ Start gentle cooling by wetting paws, belly and ears
❌ Please don’t put water directly into their mouth — this can cause choking or aspiration
❌ Avoid ice baths or icy water

🐍 Snakes
Warmer conditions mean increased snake activity. Sudden pain, swelling, lameness, weakness or vomiting and collapse should be treated as an emergency — seek veterinary care immediately.

🍖 BBQ hazards
• Fatty meats and kebabs can trigger pancreatitis
• Kebab sticks and cooked bones can cause intestinal obstruction or perforation
• Onions and garlic are toxic to pets

🐱 Cats
Cats feel the heat too and often hide it. Provide multiple cool resting spots, fresh water in several locations, and access to air‑conditioned rooms where possible.

If you’re worried about your pet at any point over the long weekend, don’t wait — we’re open and here to help.

🎄 To our Launceston community — Merry Christmas & Happy New Year! 🎆

We hope you’re enjoying a safe and relaxing festive season with your pets.

Below are our Christmas & New Year opening hours, along with a few common reasons we see pets over the holidays.

Over Christmas & New Year we commonly see pets for:

🍗 Tummy upsets & pancreatitis
Rich foods like ham, crackling, turkey skin and table scraps can trigger vomiting, diarrhoea and painful pancreatitis.

🍫 Toxic food ingestion
Common festive foods that are dangerous for pets include chocolate, grapes/raisins, onions and garlic, macadamia nuts, xylitol (found in some lollies and baked goods) and alcohol — even small amounts can be serious.

🎁 Foreign body emergencies
Curious pets often swallow things they shouldn’t, including tinsel, ribbons, string, cooked bones, BBQ skewers, ornaments, batteries or broken glass — some requiring urgent surgery.

☀️ Heat stress & dehydration
Australian summer heat puts pets at risk of heatstroke, particularly without constant access to shade and water, or if left in cars.

🎉 Stress & anxiety
Changes to routine, visitors and fireworks can lead to anxiety, escape attempts, injuries, or stress-related illnesses (especially in cats).

🌿 Toxic plants
Festive plants like lilies (extremely dangerous for cats) and poinsettias can cause illness if chewed.

If you’re worried about your pet, please call us first on 📞 6310 8499 ☎️ Calling ahead allows our team to phone-triage your pet and prepare for your arrival if it’s an emergency.

🌙 Emergency Veterinary Receptionists — Join the AEHL Team!

We’re looking for calm, capable humans to be the welcoming (and steady) voice of AEHL during our busiest times.
If you thrive under pressure, have a knack for keeping things organised when everyone else is panicking, and can offer kindness to clients on some of their hardest days — we’d love to hear from you.

🩺 About us:
At AEHL, we work hard, support each other, and never forget why we’re here — to help animals and the people who love them. Our team culture is everything. You’ll be surrounded by experienced nurses, animal attendants, receptionists, and vets who have each other’s backs and know how to keep things running smoothly no matter what walks through the door. Every role in our team matters, and we all pitch in where it counts.

📅 When we need you:
We’re an emergency hospital open Friday evenings through Monday mornings, and on all public holidays.
We’re especially looking for people available for Friday opening shifts and Monday closing shifts.

👩‍💻 About the role:
This is a casual position with the potential to become permanent part-time for the right person.
You’ll be the first point of contact for clients — answering phones, greeting arrivals, managing a schedule and coordinating with our clinical team. It’s a role that requires emotional resilience, attention to detail, and the ability to multitask (a lot).

✨ Minimum requirements (please read carefully):
✅ At least 3 years of customer service experience — ideally in a fast-paced or emotionally demanding environment.
✅ Must provide a resume with your application.
✅ Excellent communication and people skills.
✅ Confidence with computers and phones; vet software experience is preferred but not essential.
✅ Genuine empathy for animals and their people.

📩 How to apply:
Send your resume to [email protected] with “Reception Application” in the subject line.

⚠️ Important:
Only applicants who meet the minimum requirements will be contacted. Applications without a resume will not be considered.
