💔𝗩𝗘𝗧 𝗪𝗔𝗥𝗡𝗜𝗡𝗚: 𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗽 𝗯𝘂𝘆𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗽𝗼𝗽𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗿 𝗖𝗵𝗿𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗺𝗮𝘀 𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁! Every year, pet parents unknowingly turn a festive gift into an emergency vet visit. A warning regarding the Christmas "treats" many pet stores are now starting to stock for dogs. Many of these so called treats end up with the dog "enjoying" some time in a veterinary surgery over Christmas.
𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝘃𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝗺𝗮𝗷𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘀𝗲 𝗿𝗮𝘄𝗵𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗖𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗮.

The chews are made from cattle or horse hides and their journey starts with the hides being soaked in a toxic sodium sulphide to remove the hair and fat. More chemicals are used in order to split the hide into layers which is then washed with hydrogen peroxide to give the white "pure" look and remove the rancid smell. 🤢

Now comes the pretty festive colours and the glue to form cute shapes.
On testing, these chews have shown traces of arsenic, mercury, chromium and formaldehyde. 🫣
If that wasn't bad enough, they regularly cause intestinal blockages, poisoning from chemical residue and choking.
The chews go slippery when wet and are near impossible to get hold of to save a choking dog.

Please leave them in the shop where they belong or if some well-meaning person buys them for your dog/s, put them safely away then throw them in the bin! 🗑 Please be safe with your dogs!

Busy week at The Digs!
The whirlwind that is Remy turned the big O-N-E! Remy has been with us close to the start of our journey and visits a couple of times a week. Always has the biggest days then goes home completely exhausted. He always brings a smile to our faces and a fun vibe with his endless energy 🧨
Beautiful Maxi started with us just a couple of short weeks ago and we can’t help fall in love with his gentleness and movie star looks ⭐️
Maxi turned F-O-U-R this week and we loved celebrating his special day!
Happy birthday boys!
If your pup has a birthday coming up and is one of our regulars please let us know so we can celebrate 🥳

In Australia, a thoughtful addition to night shelters is changing how homeless pet owners rest—folding kennels now stand quietly beside shelter entrances, offering safe, dry space for beloved animals. These compact structures open up in seconds and are lined with insulating mats, soft bedding, and weatherproof covers. At night, gentle lighting helps pets feel secure while staying within sight of their owners.

For many living on the streets, their pets are more than companions—they’re family, protectors, and emotional anchors. But traditional shelters often bar animals, forcing people to choose between safety and separation. These folding kennels remove that heartbreaking decision. Owners can sleep inside with peace of mind, knowing their dog or cat is safe just outside, warm and sheltered.

The kennels are designed with both function and dignity in mind. Volunteers check them daily, some equipped with water bowls and chew toys. At certain locations, mobile vets stop by weekly for check-ups and free treatment. The design folds flat during the day, allowing space to be cleared for other services or cleaning.

By recognizing the bond between people and their pets, Australia is offering more than a shelter—it’s offering trust. These kennels quietly say, “We see you both, and you both matter.” It’s a small structural change with a deep emotional impact.
