What does it mean to be married to a small business owner? 😂

Well, if you ask my husband, it means spending an entire afternoon lovingly making lasagne from scratch, only for your wife to announce, “I won’t be home for dinner, I’ve got an airport run for reptiles.”

It means being unwillingly recruited as a part-time model, photographer and prop holder.

It means that instead of cuddling in bed at 10:30pm like a normal married couple, you’re sitting on the couch holding two jungle carpet pythons for a photoshoot that is going absolutely nowhere, while one of them decides to p**p on you.

They say marriage is all about compromise. Apparently, in ours, that means he compromises and I bring home more reptiles.

48 HOURS. ONE BIRD ROOM.

Our annual bird room deep clean is COMPLETE! Our feathery friends have had their short stay accommodation refreshed.

There are many ways to describe running a small business, but this week the phrase “it takes an army” has never felt more appropriate.

Over the last 48 hours, we’ve tackled a full-scale disinfection of the walls, floors and every nook and cranny. We’ve sanded, restored and repainted stands and cage fixtures, along with approximately 400 other jobs that somehow appeared along the way. 😂

Not only did our team roll up their sleeves and jump on the tools, but a wonderful friend (who was once upon a time a customer) happened to pop in at just the right moment… and promptly found herself recruited into the workforce.

That’s the thing about small business. At its heart, it’s about people, community and the relationships built along the way. And no matter how big we may grow, I hope we never lose that.

It’s now 9:45 pm, we’ve finally clocked off, and our bird room is looking FRESH!

Our feathered friends will be back on display from late Friday afternoon. 🦜

Although, knowing them, it’ll take approximately 15 minutes to undo 48 hours of cleaning, but at least we tried.

When you take a genuinely cracking photo of some of your upcoming beardies, but you realise the background is your very much not-the-business, off-brand, personal shed.

So you edit the background out. Easy. Problem solved.

Except now the photo looks too clean and you just know someone’s going to say, “AI” 🙄

But you also really want to convey that these dragons actually look THIS GOOD in person.

Then the anxiety kicks in.

Is it misleading? Is it too edited? Do I post the shed? Do I post the suspiciously perfect wall? Do I write a disclaimer? Why has posting five lizards become an ethical dilemma?

Anyway.

We've got 5 players making their debut this weekend.

Straight out of the rookie ranks and into public display, you can now spot these little crackers in our reptile corner.

We've labelled them as Assorted Morph Bearded Dragons, with the exception of the Witblits, whose side-eye glare demanded individual recognition. 😂

But between you and us, there are some pretty cool genetics in this little draft class, including Hypo Trans, Hypo het Trans, Leatherback and Normal Scale dragons.

A pretty special arrival overnight 🥹🦎

After 86 days our beautiful blue-tongue has welcomed 12 healthy little babies!

Unlike many reptiles, blue-tongues don’t lay eggs. They’re viviparous, meaning the babies develop inside mum and are born live. They are essentially tiny, fully formed versions of the adults.

We’ve been watching mum closely over the last few months as she steadily gained weight, so finding this little crew was incredibly exciting.

Mum is doing well, and the babies are already busy exploring, tongue-flicking and generally being ridiculously cute.

Starting the week strong!

Our white-lipped green tree frogs are now in store! 🐸💚

You can find their terrarium in our reptile corner.

Fun fact: White-lipped green tree frogs are one of the largest tree frog species in the world, with adults growing up to around 11–14 cm long!

After what feels like forever, Hermit Crabs are finally back.

Tiny claws, big personalities and an unhealthy obsession with upgrading their real estate. 😂🏠

We could just watch them forever.

There comes a moment in every reptile keeper’s life where you progress past “aww, cute lizard” and swing fully into reptile nerd territory. 🤓🦎

Keeping weight records is actually really interesting, it’s a great way to keep an eye on body condition, track growth and spot any unexpected patterns.

Is it slightly nerdy? Yes. Do we have spreadsheets for lizards? Also yes.
