Since the start of Spring this year (September), we have already seen ๐๐จ๐ณ๐ž๐ง๐ฌ ๐จ๐Ÿ ๐ญ๐ข๐œ๐ค ๐ฉ๐š๐ซ๐š๐ฅ๐ฒ๐ฌ๐ข๐ฌ cases admitted into our hospital - and heartbreakingly, not all of them have made it home.

Tick paralysis is one of the most devastating, scary - and preventable - emergencies we face year-round.
These cases are ๐ญ๐ซ๐š๐ฎ๐ฆ๐š๐ญ๐ข๐œ, ๐ž๐ฑ๐ฉ๐ž๐ง๐ฌ๐ข๐ฏ๐ž, ๐š๐ง๐ ๐จ๐Ÿ๐ญ๐ž๐ง ๐Ÿ๐š๐ญ๐š๐ฅ, even with intensive care.

We have many reliable and affordable tick preventatives available - many are as simple as a monthly or 3 monthly chew - or a spot on you can use every 6 months. ๐ŸงธHappy came in recently after his parents noticed something odd โ€” his brand-new plush bunny was already missing an ear and a limbโ€ฆ and heโ€™d only had it for 10 minutes!

Clearly, Happy really enjoyed his new toy โ€” maybe a little too much.

Thankfully, his quick-thinking parents brought him straight in to see us. Our team promptly induced vomiting, and within just five minutes, up came the missing ear and arm.

Poor Happy wasnโ€™t feeling his best after returning the evidence, but we gave him an anti-nausea injection, plenty of cuddles, and lots of reassurance.

He perked up quickly โ€” and graciously left his bunny with us for safekeeping.

We all learned something that day: Happy might need some more durable toys in the future.

โญ๏ธWhile Happyโ€™s story had a happy ending, itโ€™s a great reminder that not all toys are created equal โ€” especially for our more enthusiastic chewers!

Some soft toys, especially those with small parts or poorly stitched seams, can quickly become a hazard if swallowed. Always keep an eye on new toys during playtime, and opt for durable, vet-approved options when possible.

If youโ€™re ever unsure whether a toy is safe for your pet, our team is always happy to offer advice!

๐ŸŒผโ˜€๏ธ Springtime Pet Safety Tips! ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ

As the weather warms up and we enjoy longer, sunnier days, itโ€™s important to be aware of the seasonal risks that come with spring โ€” for both you and your pets!

Here are some common springtime dangers to keep in mind:

๐Ÿ Snakes & Ticks
Snakes become more active in spring. Keep a close eye on your pets, especially in bushy or grassy areas. Paralysis ticks are also more prevalent this time of year โ€” ensure your pet is up to date with their tick prevention!

๐ŸŒก๏ธ Heat Stroke & Respiratory Stress
Hotter days can quickly lead to overheating โ€” especially in short-nosed (brachycephalic) breeds like French Bulldogs and Pugs. Always provide shade, water, and avoid walking your dog in the heat of the day.

๐Ÿ”ฅ Burns from Hot Surfaces
Footpaths, roads, and sand can become scorching under the spring sun. If itโ€™s too hot for your hand, itโ€™s too hot for their paws!

๐ŸŒŠ Water-Related Injuries
With more beach and pool days, keep a close eye on your pets near water. Even strong swimmers can get tired, disoriented, or swallowed by waves.

๐ŸŒธ Springtime Allergies & Skin Flares
Just like us, pets can suffer from pollen allergies and seasonal skin flare-ups. If you notice excessive scratching, licking, or red skin, book a consult with us.

๐Ÿฆ  UPDATE: Confirmed Leptospirosis Case in Helensburgh ๐Ÿฆ

Following our recent post about confirmed cases of leptospirosis in the Southern Highlands and Shoalhaven, we now have confirmation of a diagnosed case in Helensburgh this month.

โš ๏ธ This brings the threat closer to home โ€” with the Illawarra region now directly affected.
Leptospirosis is a deadly bacterial disease spread through contaminated water, soil, or urine (commonly from rats), and can be fatal to dogs if not caught early.

๐Ÿ’‰ If your dog is unvaccinated and spends time in any of the following environments, we strongly recommend speaking to your vet ASAP:
โ€ข Creeks, puddles, or standing water
โ€ข Bushland or rural areas
โ€ข Places with rodent activity
โ€ข Travel to affected areas (including South Coast, Highlands, or Sydney)

๐Ÿšจ Symptoms of leptospirosis include:
โ€ข Lethargy
โ€ข Vomiting
โ€ข Loss of appetite
โ€ข Fever
โ€ข Jaundice (yellow gums or eyes)
โ€ข Blood in urine or unusual urination
Please seek immediate veterinary care if you notice any of these signs.

โ— This disease is also zoonotic โ€” meaning it can infect humans through contact with contaminated surfaces or infected urine.
Symptoms in people may start like the flu but can escalate into serious illness.

๐Ÿ“ At Kiama Veterinary Hospital, we stock vaccines covering the local strain.
To book or discuss your dogโ€™s risk, call us on 4232 1221.

Desexing your ferret isnโ€™t just a good idea โ€“ itโ€™s essential for their health and happiness. Hereโ€™s what you need to know ๐Ÿฉบ๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿฝ

โญ๏ธ Keeps Female Ferrets Safe
If female ferrets (called jills) arenโ€™t desexed or bred, they can stay in heat too long โ€“ which can lead to serious illness or even death. Desexing prevents this completely.

โญ๏ธ Calms Hormonal Behaviour
Desexing reduces aggressive behaviour, strong smells, and marking โ€“ especially in males. It makes your ferret easier to live with and a lot more cuddly!

โญ๏ธ Helps With That Ferret Smell
Ferrets naturally have a musky scent, but desexing (especially early) can make it a lot milder.

โญ๏ธ No Risk of Surprise Babies
Ferrets breed fast and can be very persistent โ€“ desexing keeps things under control, especially if you have more than one!

โญ๏ธ Better Health = Longer Life
Desexed ferrets tend to live healthier, more relaxed lives. That means more time for snuggles, zoomies, and fun.

๐Ÿ’‰ At our Kiama Downs Vet Clinic, our exotics team is experienced with ferrets and understands the unique care they need. Our team takes every precaution to support your petโ€™s health and recovery.
If youโ€™re thinking about desexing or have questions about your ferretโ€™s wellbeing, feel free to give us a call. Alternatively, you can email us at [email protected]. Attn: Kiama Downs Team. ๐Ÿซถ๐Ÿฝ
