Halfway House Thoroughbreds

Halfway House Thoroughbreds Rehabilitation, reeducation & rehoming of retired thoroughbred racehorses. We take retired thoroughbreds of the track, rehabilitate, retrain, and rehome them.

We believe that every retired racehorse deserves a loving home and a new life when their racing career comes to an end. Our philosophy is that every retired racehorse has a talent for some other discipline outside racing. Its our job to find out what that talent is, develop that talent, and then match each horse with a new owner who is looking for a new partner in their chosen horse sport. Its lik

e building a horses resume, the more educated and qualified they are, the more employable they are. We are particular about the homes we send our horses to and try to place them where they will be best cared for and have the best chance of a successful career, whether that be dressage, jumping, hacking, an all rounder, or simply trail riding. They are given ample rest time in the paddock to unwind and recover from minor injuries prior to commencing reeducation. They then begin basic training in lunging, flatwork, basic dressage work, and jumping depending on the horses talents. They are ridden out on roads and trails to ensure they are quiet in traffic, with other horses, and with dogs and other distractions. Some horse may even get out to a couple of competitions before rehoming. Every effort is made to ensure that they are quiet and safe to be rehomed. If you are considering a retired racehorse for your next competition mount, or you are looking to rehome your retired racehorse, please feel free to contact us.

What a great story! Wonder if we could teach any of ours to paint.

Great morning for a ride out with Opal Ombra and George Walter Henry! The boys met some of the locals and stopped for a mid traily snack of tasty legumes.

Opal is still looking for his forever home, and someone to take him on to a great new career. We'd like to see him go to a hack/show home as we think he has great potential, but he would be more than happy to go to a trail and pleasure riding home.

He retired after a long and successful racing career, due to a crack in a sesamoid bone. Veterinary advice was that he would be fine with sufficient box rest initially and subsequent paddock rest, which he has had plenty of. He has been back in work for about three months doing lunging, flat work, and trail rides, and is learning quickly.

Opal is a very flashy little guy, with three long white socks and an iridescent coat. He has a natural elegance and suspension to his paces, and is developing into a lovely round hack type in a surprisingly short amount of time. He has a pretty face and a kind eye, and could easily be mistaken for an Anglo.
Opal is a gentle and sensitive soul and has been an absolute pleasure to work with. He is very people orientated, quiet and willing, and is thoroughly enjoying his new line of work. He is smart and trainable, progressing with every lesson, and will take no time to get to preliminary level dressage or newcomer hack standard.

He is showing no signs of lameness or discomfort from his past injury, however for the sake of his longevity as a riding horse he will only be rehomed as a hack or dressage horse. He has one scar on the rear of his right front cannon, and a small calcification on one fetlock, but is otherwise blemish free. He is a bit claustrophobic with his head and tying up, but this is a work in progress and he is improving every day. Otherwise, he is very easy going and no trouble to wash, shoe, float, worm, bridle, etc.

Opal is a very special little guy and will go far in the right hands. For a competent, small teenager, or small adult with a soft hand and a patient attitude, he will be your best friend and a fantastic competition horse to boot!

As always, no novices, beginners, or nervous nellies thanks.

It's just come to our attention that we have hit the big FIVE O! Thats 50 ex-racehorses rehabilitated and re-homed into loving homes and fantastic new careers since taking on our first, six years ago.

It has to be said that, counter to the sterotype of thoroughbreds and ex-racehorses being a bit crazy, we have found every one that we have taken on and worked with to be an absolute pleasure to have around. Collectively, they have displayed a strength of character, a work ethic, an eagerness to please, and a love for life that, for us, makes every dollar and every hour spent well worth it.

Just because we can, heres a few of our favourites.

We are very happy to announce that The Oval Office (Malcolm at the track, Abe with us, and now Obi with his new owners) has found a fantastic new home with LaTonia Fraissard at Caboolture. He will start working towards a great career in eventing in his new home and we wish him all the best. Thankyou LaTonia for taking on Abe, we know he will do you proud, and thank you to Katie Gorrell for your help and referral. Go Abe... we mean Obi!

Larundel Garfield is looking for a fantastic dressage home to take him on to greater things.

Garfield is an Australian Warmblood, is 17.3hh with correct conformation, an enormous engine, lovely shoulder, straight legs, and plenty of bone. Although he is big, he is very strong and athletic, and doesn’t feel at all cumbersome to ride. He is light in hand and responsive to the leg and seat. He is substantial enough to carry a large rider but, with great sensitivity to the aides and a narrower ribcage, perfectly rideable for the smaller person. He has three very correct paces, with an enormous marching 4 beat walk, clear trot and an uphill canter. He is a full brother to “Larundel Gianni”, that was 2010 Supreme Warmblood Exhibit at the Brisbane Royal under an international judge.

Garfield loves his work, and is never happier than when training. He tries exceptionally hard, and has always been a horse who seems to enjoy learning. He will “take refuge” in his work with a supportive rider, even in a stressful or frightening environment.

During his time with us, Garfield has competed successfully at Novice level, won Novice champion at his last official outing, and in his first unofficial elementary test, scored over 70%. He is working solidly in all elementary work, with clear walk pirouettes, impressive laterals, strong counter canter and walk/canter transitions, and is starting training on flying changes and canter pirouette. His real forte will become clear as he progresses further, with enormous talent for collected work. He was started with classical principles in mind, and is established with in-hand work, including Spanish Walk. He would thrive in either a competitive environment or in a classical dressage home with this training base.

Garfield has done a bit of jumping, mostly over logs as a change from dressage training, and shows some talent for it, though this has never been the focus of his training. He has regularly been out on roads and trails, and is fine with traffic, although his is afraid of trucks and has a bit of a phobia of street signs.

Garfield is a pleasure to work with under saddle and in hand, and is easy going with most things, though does have some quirks. Easy to shoe, float, wash, worm, inject etc. Hendra vaccination up to date.

I have had Garfield since I bought him from his breeder as a 4 year old, and it is with great regret that we offer him for sale. Due to a change in my work situation, I won’t have time to train and compete him. He is the kind of horse that needs work and training, thrives on one-on-one attention and is happiest when working and learning.

Due to his talent and quirks, he will only be placed with the best of experienced dressage homes.
