"Hoofcare isn't rocket science," I have often heard people say. The implication being that it isn't hard to do.

They are right. It isn't rocket science.

It's biomechanical engineering.
It's trigonometry.
It's physics.
It's advanced biology.
It's living sculpture.
It's geometry.
It's psychology.
And, above all else, it is art... because sometimes all the mathematics in the world aren't enough for the horse. And it is our job to hear them speak when they tell us they need something different. Something more than what we expected.

They are right. It isn't rocket science. We aren't sending anyone to the moon, or to space.

Instead, we are improving the lives of those here on earth, right now. Those without a common tongue to tell us what they need. Those who suffer at our hands more often than we want to admit. Those who we try our best for. Those who try their best for us, always.

No, it isn't rocket science. It is so, so much more.

A few weeks Back I Auditored at The posture and Function clinic presented by the very Knowledgeable Raquel Butler. Wow what a few days that was! The biggest take home message for me was the influence of body dysfunction on behaviour! I had 3 horses that I Trim participate in the clinic and it was fascinating to see the dysfunctions that Raquel picked up and how it correlated with how they behave when I Trim them. From shoulder issues that contributed to that horse snatching it's front feet, to stifle issues which made it very uncomfortable for the horse to have its hinds trimmed. The body effects the feet and the feet effect the body! Everything is connected as a whole! I really encourage horse owners and horse professionals to attend this clinic if they get the chance in the future!

When dealing with laminitis, one of the metrics used to determine if a treatment is working is to look at sole depth-per the teaching of Dr Ric Redden.

If there is no increase in sole depth, seen on xray after say 4 weeks, then the treatment plan must be re-evaluated.

Sole depth is the number one priority in deciding if healing is taking place or not. Growth of sole will indicate that the vital blood supply is being re established. Without blood, tissues cannot grow.

Look at the before and during X-rays and look at this important parameter when you see these shown in internet land. For folks not experienced in looking at X-rays, just measure the tip the coffin bone to the bottom of the foot, straight down. It will give you a measurement of the true hard sole plus the sole corium -the life giving blood supply.

Measure it, and compare it to the โ€˜afterโ€™ X-rays, 5 or so weeks later. In many cases there is ZERO sole growth. This means the treatment package is not working.

If sole is growing then it means the pressure is being lifted from the sole corium, and the blood supply is being re established.

Correct biomechanics will create healing and sole will grow at an incredible rate.

Pair of Easycare, Easyshoe Sport Glue ons, applied today for Rehab out of traditional steel shoes.

These are a rubber shoe that allow more shock absorption than steel. Aswell as rehabbing, these will help to transition this horse from shoes to barefoot as they allow the horses hoof to start flexing again and don't interfere with the biomechanical function of the hoof.

Can't wait to see how this Lovely Mare goes with them.
