🐶 FUN FACT ABOUT CANINE OVULATION 🧬
Did you know dogs are actually quite unique compared to most other species when it comes to ovulation?

Most mammals ovulate mature eggs (secondary oocytes) ready for fertilisation immediately.

Dogs, however, ovulate IMMATURE eggs (primary oocytes) that still need another 48–72 hours to mature before they can be fertilised.

Even more interesting — ovulation usually occurs a couple of days AFTER standing heat begins.

This is why breeding timing is so important and why progesterone testing plays such a critical role in canine reproduction.

Accurate timing helps determine the optimal
breeding window for: 🐾 Natural mating 🐾 Fresh AI 🐾 Chilled semen AI 🐾 Frozen semen AI / TCI

Breeding too early or too late can significantly reduce pregnancy success rates — especially when using frozen semen where timing is extremely precise.

Canine reproduction is far more complex than simply breeding during a heat cycle! 🐾

🐾 Transcervical Insemination (TCI) in Canine Reproduction 🐾

At Kallangur Veterinary Surgery, we are proud to offer advanced reproductive services, including Transcervical Insemination (TCI)—a highly effective, non-invasive breeding technique performed by our skilled and experienced reproduction veterinarians.

TCI allows semen (fresh, chilled, or frozen) to be placed directly into the uterus without the need for surgery or anaesthesia. This method closely mimics natural breeding while offering greater precision and control.

By combining TCI with accurate progesterone timing, we are able to achieve excellent pregnancy rates and strong litter sizes, even in more challenging cases.

✨ Why consider TCI?
✅Non-invasive procedure with minimal stress for your dog.
✅Suitable for fresh, chilled, and frozen semen
Requires lower s***m numbers, making it ideal for frozen or lower-quality samples
✅Improves success rates through precise timing and placement
✅This technique is particularly valuable when working with frozen semen, limited semen quality, or when natural mating isn’t possible.

If you’re considering breeding your dog and would like to explore the best options available, our experienced reproduction team is here to help guide you every step of the way.🐾🐶🐕

Whether you're an experienced breeder or just getting started.

Understanding progesterone (P4) testing is a MUST! so let's discuss...

Why progesterone (P4) testing is so important when breeding your bitch 🐾

Timing really is everything when it comes to successful breeding — and this is where progesterone testing plays a crucial role.

Every bitch is individual and doesn't always follow the text-book oestrous cycle. Some bi***es can be very clean (little to no discharge) or silent (don't show oestrus behaviours or accepting the stud) and so the timing of ovulation right can be difficult. This makes determining the fertile window for each bitch difficult and without testing, it can be very easy to miss it.

Progesterone testing allows us to accurately track hormonal changes, helping us identify the LH surge and ovulation as illustrated on the graph, so we can determine the optimal breeding time specific to your bitch’s cycle.

At Kallangur Vet Services, we are specialists in canine reproduction and offer in-house progesterone testing, allowing us to closely monitor your girl and provide precise, real-time guidance on:

✨ The best time for natural mating
✨ Optimal timing for fresh and chilled semen via vaginal insemination or transcervical insemination
✨ Critical timing for frozen semen transcervical and surgical insemination (where precision is everything)

By taking the guesswork out of breeding, we can significantly improve pregnancy success rates and help maximize litter size.

But it doesn’t stop there…

Progesterone testing also allows us to accurately predict whelping dates, so we can:
🐶 Monitor your bitch closely as she approaches her due date
🐶 Provide support when it matters most
🐶 Plan and schedule elective caesarean sections at the safest and most appropriate time if needed

Breeding doesn’t have to be guesswork — with the right expertise and tools, we can make the process smoother, safer, and more successful for both you and your dog.

If you’re planning a litter and want the best possible outcome, chat to our team on (07) 3204 4332 about progesterone testing and our specialized reproductive services. 💛
