Dog groomers really can’t win sometimes.
Lately, we’ve been seeing a large number of severely matted dogs coming through the salon, and recently we received a complaint regarding irritation a dog experienced following the removal of heavy matting. The irritation was referred to as “clipper burn,” which is incredibly disheartening for our team, and it absolutely was not the case.
Between our salon staff, we have half a century of combined professional grooming experience. We are highly educated in clipper safety, skin care, and coat maintenance, and preventing clipper burn is something we take extremely seriously.
What many people don’t realise is that when a dog’s coat becomes severely matted, the skin underneath is often already compromised. Tight matting can trap moisture, urine, faeces, dirt, and bacteria against the skin for extended periods of time. Once the matting is removed, it is not uncommon for irritation, redness, sensitivity, or sores to become visible — particularly in delicate areas where the coat has been tightly pulling on the skin.
Dogs should never be living with coats in this condition. Sadly, we regularly see dogs arrive covered in severe matting, urine scalding, faeces, and skin irritation. While we always do everything we can to help these dogs safely and compassionately, cases like this can sometimes be painful, traumatic, and even require veterinary-assisted sedation grooming for the welfare of the dog. We understand that life happens and sometimes things get out of hand, and we’re not here to judge those cases, but blaming us for the consequences and aftermath of rectifying a neglect case is not acceptable. We spend many of our weekends working a 6th day running seminars to help people better maintain their dogs, so to blame us for lack of care in burning a dog is just so disappointing.
Routine maintenance grooming is not a luxury for coated dogs — it is an essential part of their health and wellbeing.
Most dogs requiring regular grooming should be professionally groomed every 6–8 weeks, alongside thorough brushing and combing multiple times per week at home. Quality shampoos, conditioners, and detangling products also make a huge difference in maintaining healthy skin and coat condition.
Education is something we are incredibly passionate about, and we are always more than happy to help guide our clients with coat maintenance, home grooming advice, and product recommendations. If you’re struggling to maintain your dog’s coat, please reach out — we are here to help, never judge.
At the end of the day, we all want the same thing: happy, healthy, comfortable dogs.
