With great sadness we share the passing of James (Jim) Rodger yesterday.
Many people knew Dad was undergoing treatment for cancer. After some complications, Jim left us peacefully yesterday afternoon, surrounded by family.

He will be remembered as a devoted father, partner, friend, and veterinarian whose kindness, humour, and care touched countless lives. His love for animals and people alike made the world brighter for everyone who knew him. Though we feel his loss deeply, his kindness and legacy will live on in all of us. Jim will be dearly missed and remembered with love.

Details of the funeral service will be shared soon. We know Dad was well loved by his community so we would love to celebrate his life by asking you all to share your favourite memories and photographs of Dad with us here.

If you would like to contact the family, please email his daughter Lilly Rodger at [email protected].

Around to July again. Pregnant mares are in the later stage of pregnancy and subject to stress, especially with the extreme changes in weather.
Sport horses, be it pony clubbers or showjumpers, camp drafters or cutters are all working hard, sweating then getting cold.
Now is the time of the year to stay on top of general health issues. Call our practice to discuss what can be done for the best. We don't sell horse rugs, horse food, but we can help with health advice vaccination programmes including tetanus prevention, Equine Herpes in pregnant mares or faecal egg counts to see how your worming programme is working. We can sell you a suitable horse wormer or advise on management systems.
Dont forget to use your local practitioner who will give you sound practical advice .
If you are moving your pony on or buying a replacement a thorough prepurchase examination is a good safe guard.
There is a lot to think about in July! Call us or call in for a chat.

📣 From four men with a vision… to 10,000 visitors a year! 🐎

The Warburton Estate Agents Scone Horse Festival began with one simple idea - to celebrate the heart of our town and its horses. 💛 This year, we pay tribute to the founders who kicked it all off 45 years ago with nothing but passion and community spirit.

Read the full story and see how a parade, a ball and a few horses became an iconic 10-day festival that now puts Scone on the map 👉 https://sconehorsefestival.com.au/news-and-media/

Now we are in May and entering the time in mare pregnancies when things start to go wrong.
Report any premature udder development and investigate including placental scans. Abortions due to placentitis can be prevented.
Watch also for viral abortions from now on. Isolate all aborted mares and their foetus and have them investigated. This disease is highly contagious and can decimate your breeding programme. Keep up to date with EHV1:4 vaccinations.
Good luck and be vigilant.

Our Story

Jerry’s Plains Veterinary Hospital is the Veterinary Practice of James (Jim ) Rodger and is widely known throughout Australia and overseas as a specialist equine reproduction clinic. After many years as a multi-vet practice with new faces coming in for the horse breeding season, the practice is now run as a single man practice which continues to service thoroughbred studs in the area and the increasing non thoroughbred industry, particularly in the sphere of artificial breeding. The practice now offers excellent facilities, both for equine and small animal patients. We are committed to providing an all-round service to the local community. Small animal surgeries such as desexings are carried out by veterinarians who come in when required for those services. Although best known for our work in equine reproduction, we have high standards in all aspects of equine practice, including lameness, medicine, surgery, imaging . The practice is well-equipped with digital x-ray, video-endoscope, ultrasound, , and well stocked ambulatory service.
