School's out 🎉

If you are looking for some fun activities to do with both the kids and pets this holidays why not try one of these?

1. Get the kids to teach them a new trick! Try shake hands or spin 🤝
2. Take advantage of the cooler weather and head outdoors for a walk or hike somewhere new! 🌳
3. Set up an obstacle course in the backyard - a couple of small boxes and a pool noodle, stick, or padded broom stick make an easy jump 🐕
4. Build a cardboard box castle for your cat, but skip the moat! 🏰
5. Treasure hunts - get the kids to hide some of your pets favourite treats in a spare room or in the backyard 🥓
6. Make some treats for your pets - get the kids to help make some frozen pupsicles or catnip cookies! 🍓
7. Visit a pet friendly cafe or playground if your dog is good with strangers ☕️
8. Arts and Crafts - Grab yourself a cheap plain dog accessory and some non-toxic fabric markers and your kids can design a one of a kind oufit for your cat or dog! Don't forget the fashion show afterwards! 👕
9. Plan a photoshoot for the kids and pets, but don't count on any of the photos being useable! 📸
10. Make some toys - use the empty tissue boxes or toliet rolls, put some treats in the centre and stuff the exits with newspaper to give your cat or dog a bit of a challenge 🗞

Blood donors are superheroes in both the human and the animal world 🦸‍♂️🦸‍♀️

In honour of world blood donor day here are some fun facts about blood donations in animals:
🩸Cats have 3 different bloods types
🩸Cats should only be given the correct type as they can have severe reactions
🩸Dogs have more that 12 different blood types
🩸Dogs can be given any type for their first transfusion, then should be matched
🩸In an emergency cats can be given dog blood! It’s actually safer than the wrong type of cat blood!
🩸After blood has been collected red cells are viable for 30 days but platelets only last 12 hours
🩸Donors can give blood every 6 weeks
🩸Specialist centres will often have a blood bank or a list of reliable donors

❄️ With the cold weather snap we have seen an increase in the number of male cats presenting with urinary issues that put them at high risk of a urinary blockage ❄️

Like most of us cats don't love leaving their nice warm beds to use the litter tray, this urine retention can then cause other abnormalities which can result in a blockage. Blockages can be life threatening and do require immediate intervention.
