When I was a kid, all I wanted was to have ALLLLL of the pets. I especially loved cats. I would draw house plans that had an extra bedroom as a cat room, write lists of the breeds of dogs and cats I'd love to have one day, and I would meticulously take notes while watching Harry's Practice every week.

At 13, I screamed blue murder at a group of boys who were throwing rocks at an octopus that got stuck under the pier as the tide receded.

As an adult, I now realise that my parents *were* correct, and having pets costs lots of time and money (on top of all the regular adulting costs and responsibilities). While that may have put a hold on owning my top 7 dog breeds of 1999, I have built a life which is possibly even better than 9 year old Lana could have dreamed.

Not only do I have my own wonderful fur-family, but I am also trusted to look after other people's animals on a daily basis, as a veterinary nurse and as a pet sitter. I care for animals when they're sick, and when their humans are on holidays, and I give them all the love I would give my own pets in the same situations, and I absolutely love it.

I might forget to reply to messages, like, a lot, but I promise, when I do, and you're finally on the holiday you've been looking forward to all year, your pets are in excellent hands with me.

2016 called - they want their filters back! 🙈 I thought I was so "artsy" and "creative" with my filters lolololol

This was the year that changed *everything* (cue dramatic flourish!) I became a "crazy cat lady" and adopted Evie 🐈, Vastra flew into my life and I became guardian of my brother's dog, Emmy. I also fell in love with Daisy 🐈 at first sight (my friend was fostering Daisy's mum, and I was accidentally present for Daisy's birth), and subsequently adopted her just before Christmas.

Dino and I didn't know each other - neither of us were even living in Ipswich at the time - but he would have been in Mackay with his ancient cockatiel, Bird (full name Bird is the Word).

Would I go back to 2016 if I had the chance? Yes, but only so I could take Dino and he could meet all of the animals I loved who are no longer with us 🌈
