7 Tips for fireworks and your dog!
1) Exercise! taking your dog for a good walk or having some stimulating play before the fireworks begin can lower their anxiety levels and help them cope easier when the big bangs begin!
- throwing the ball
- sniffing exercises (hide some treats/or their dinner in a towel or around the house or ask me for some more tips and tricks)
- play some tug or engage them with their favourite toy.
2) Stay calm. Dogs react to our pheromones and scent. That means, if you're worried or anxious about how they will react, they'll be worried and anxious.
3) Have a safe space they can retreat to where noise is more muffled. If they have a crate or similar, throw a heavy blanket over the top.
Try to limit the noise of the fireworks by closing windows and even the curtains in that room or your entire home. Sometimes the flashing lights are just as scary. So if you've got a good view, make sure your dog doesn't.
4) Play some music! 🎶 There are a lot of dog calming playlists on YouTube or on Spotify that you can play that can help some dogs to relax. Just pop in "dog calming music" to your Google or Spotify search bar.
5) dog calming products like thunder jackets, zylkene (a natural calming remedy for dogs and cats) and calming pheromone products (like adaptil) are available at our Innisfail pet stores and vets!
6) having some extra tasty treats on hand like cheese or chicken is a great way to keep your dogs focus on you and not the fireworks. When they're showing signs of calm behaviour and looking at you while they fireworks are on, give them something yummy to help build positive associations.
7) lots of love and cuddles. If your dog is extra needy, it's because they see you as their protector. Their best friend who won't let something bad happen to them. Pop a movie on and give them those extra pats so they know they're safe. 💜🐾
Bonus tip! Your vet is also a great resource for those dogs who are extra fearful/anxious and can help you come up with the best plan for your dog. Use them!
Also: If you have to leave your dog alone while the fireworks are on, please take extra precautions in their security. Over stressed and fearful dogs are even more ingenious and will even hurt themselves to escape a situation that scares them.
So from me, keep your furry family members safe and calm tonight!
