Our main branch is in Hughenden with regular outreach clinics in Winton, Richmond and throughout North QLD. We started in 2012 as a one vet practice based in Muttaburra servicing mostly rural clients. Over the years, the practice has grown to service a number of small towns throughout the Central West of Queensland. In 2017, we expanded into Hughenden, where our main clinic is now based. We have 4

vets and 3 nurses working as a progressive team to provide up to date care for all your valued animals, be they large or small.

💰 FIRST-TIME PREGNANCY DIAGNOSIS SUBSIDY AVAILABLE 💰

Are you in the Desert Channels Queensland (DCQ) catchment area and considering pregnancy diagnosis of your breeders for the first time?

Eligible producers may be able to access a financial incentive of up to 50% of pregnancy diagnosis costs (approximately $2 per head) through a DCQ-supported program.

Pregnancy diagnosis is one of the most valuable management tools available to improve herd performance and profitability.

✅ Identify empty females early
✅ Reduce feed costs on non-productive animals
✅ Improve herd efficiency and reproductive performance
✅ Make better management and marketing decisions
✅ Support improved grazing land condition and sustainability

Eligibility includes:
• Producers within the DCQ catchment area
• Breeder herds only (not trade, backgrounding or export animals)
• First-time pregnancy diagnosis participants
• Willingness to provide pregnancy diagnosis records and participate in land condition monitoring

Dr Libby, Dr Julia, Dr Shae and the GAVS team provide professional pregnancy diagnosis services across North and Western Queensland and can help eligible producers access this incentive.

Pregnancy diagnosis isn’t just about finding pregnancies - it’s about identifying non-productive animals, improving herd performance, and making informed management decisions that increase profitability.

💗 All the Pink Ladies 💗

Dr Libby and Nurse Mads have spent a day this week at Muttaburra running a Fixed Time Artificial Insemination (FTAI) program in approximately 200 Wagyu cows.

FTAI is a fantastic tool for beef producers, allowing access to superior genetics without the need to purchase high-value bulls. It also creates a tighter calving period, improves management of breeding herds, and helps produce more consistent and marketable calves.

One of the most exciting things about working with this herd has been watching the ongoing improvements not only in genetics but also in management systems. The introduction of Electronic Identification (EID) tags and computer-based herd recording has provided valuable data to support breeding decisions, track performance, and drive continual herd improvement.

Combining modern reproductive technologies with accurate data collection allows producers to make informed decisions that can have long-term benefits for productivity, profitability, and herd performance.

A big thank you to the team for having us involved in another successful breeding program. We look forward to seeing the next generation of Wagyu calves on the ground! 🐂🐄

Two flying services, one tiny outback airstrip. ✈️🐴🚑

Today at Einasleigh, the Flying Vet and the Flying Doctor crossed paths on the same runway — a pretty special reminder of how important these services are for rural and remote Australia.

Dr Libby dropped in to see a horse with a sore eye on the way through to bull testing near Croydon, while the Royal Flying Doctor Service aircraft was also on the ground at the strip.

Only in the bush can a horse eye consult and remote human healthcare meet at the same airstrip in the middle of the day.

A good reminder that whether it’s people or animals, distance doesn’t stop country communities from getting the care they need. ❤️

Locum vet position available - June 2026🐱🐮🐶🐴🦘🐪🦄

GAVS is on the hunt for a mixed or small animal locum vet for June (or part thereof). We are a progressive clinic with a passion for providing the best possible care for our patients and an outstanding customer experience.

The clinic is 50:50 small animals and largies, with a large amount of the work on cattle stations in the surrounding districts and running outreach clinics in local communities. Being in a country area (4 hours from Townsville), we get the opportunity to tackle the more complex surgical and medical cases but are not too far away to refer when required.

Accommodation, vehicle and plenty of biccies and cake provided. 🍰☕

If you are comfortable with sole charge, enjoy working with a professional but fun team and like having a cuppa and cake for smoko, you might be just what we need!
