The activities you engage in with your dog can have negative consequences for their health and wellbeing.
❌ Dog parks are the unknown wildcard in your dog’s world. In our experience they reinforce bad habits and poor social skills.
🧡 Sit outside the dog park and practice skill development instead.
❌ Retractable leads cause physical injuries to dogs and people. They also create a disconnect between guardians and their dogs.
🧡 Use a long line and become confident in working with your dog for calm connection.
❌ We get it, you want your dog to be friendly. Over socialising dogs, letting them say hello to everyone, leads to reactivity and a dominated ability to self regulate.
🧡 Never let you dog say hello on lead. Your dog’s social group should be kept to 3 to 5 friends that match their energy and play style.
❌ Harnesses are one of the most important purchases you can make for your dog. Step in harnesses and any harness that crowds the shoulders should be avoided.
🧡 Ensuring the harness has 4 to 5 connection points and can be adjusted in 4-5 areas is the best design. Anatomically designed harnesses minimise long term musculoskeletal damage.
❌ Socialisation is the worst practiced skill among dogs in Australia. Your dog isn’t public property and shouldn’t be approached by every dog and person you see.
🧡 Exposure, the practice of visiting different environments and allowing your dog time to relax and become passive is the best skill you will ever teach them. Allow them to be invisible.
