Mayfair Veterinary Clinic

Mayfair Veterinary Clinic We care about you and your pets. We know pets are family. Mayfair Veterinary Clinic is a family small animal clinic. We treat you and your pets like family.

We treat cats and dogs, and have a special interest in birds, rodents and pocket pets. We are a clinic many dogs can't wait to come and they don't want to leave. We do admit the awesome treats and cuddles are what makes dogs love visiting us. At Mayfair Veterinary Clinic, we understand that your pet is a part of your family, and as such, we want to know about you to help us understand where your

companion animal/s fit into your family. Being a small family practitioner practice, we strive to foster a relationship between veterinarian and client, and if possible encourage follow-up consults to be carried out with the same veterinarian. Clients are encouraged to bring their children to consults to be a part of their pet's health program too. The clinic stocks a range of parasite control medications, foods, shampoos and ear and teeth cleaning products. Our staff are happy to help advise you in selecting the products needed to meet your pet's needs. We stock Hill's and Royal Canin. We have great snacks and also carry bird pellets. We are happy to order in special diets as needed for your pet. As a new client, please arrive 10 minutes before your consult to allow time to fill out our new client registration forms. The information on both you, your family and animal/s will be helpful to us in our effort to provide you with the professional service you desire. Please feel free to call us to schedule an appointment or visit our website to book online. Our goal is to maximise the relationship between our clients and the animals they share their lives with. Thank you. The Veterinarians and Staff at Mayfair Veterinary Clinic

⚠️ Parvovirus Alert – Tasmania ⚠️
We’re seeing a concerning rise in parvovirus (parvo) cases across Tasmania. Parvo is a highly contagious and potentially fatal virus that mainly affects puppies and unvaccinated dogs.
🐾 Clinical signs to watch for:
• Lethargy or weakness
• Loss of appetite
• Vomiting
• Severe (often bloody) diarrhoea
• Fever or low body temperature
• Rapid dehydration
If your dog shows any of these signs, seek veterinary care immediately — early treatment can be lifesaving.
💉 Prevention is key:
The best protection against parvo is keeping your dog’s vaccinations up to date. The vaccination is very effective. Puppies require a full vaccination course, and adult dogs need regular boosters to maintain immunity.
🚫 Reduce risk:
• Avoid taking unvaccinated puppies to public places
• Keep your dog away from unknown or sick dogs
• Practice good hygiene (parvo can survive in the environment for long periods)
Let’s work together to keep our pets safe. If you’re unsure about your dog’s vaccination status, contact your vet today.
❤️ Protect your pets. Stay informed. Act early.

🐾 Aggie's Spotlight & Healing with Laser Therapy 🐾

Meet Aggie, an 11.5 year old spoodle that recently came to see us here at Mayfair, Dr. Beckie assessed Aggie and diagnosed her with cruciate disease, a common condition affecting the knee joint. Cruciate disease occurs when the cruciate ligament becomes damaged or torn, leading to pain, inflammation, lameness, and reduced mobility. It’s something we see often, especially in active or aging pets, and early support can make a big difference in comfort and recovery.
To help this Aggie we incorporated laser therapy into her treatment plan. 💡✨
Laser therapy is a non-invasive, pain-free treatment that uses focused energy to stimulate the body’s natural healing processes.
Benefits of laser therapy include:
✔️ Reduced pain and inflammation
✔️ Improved circulation
✔️ Faster tissue healing
✔️ Increased mobility and comfort
✔️ No sedation or downtime
We’re happy to report that this Aggie is responding very well and is already showing improved comfort and movement! Seeing our patients feel better and get back to enjoying life is what we love most. 💙
If you think your pet may be showing signs of cruciate disease or joint discomfort, feel free to reach out to our team—we’re always here to help.

One Tooth, Two Tips!

A bifid tooth

Little Padme has a double-tipped baby canine, with the adult tooth still unerupted underneath. This is an uncommon but usually harmless developmental variation in kittens.

We’ll simply monitor as the permanent canine erupts, making sure the baby tooth sheds normally. Treatment is only needed if the deciduous tooth doesn’t fall out or affects the adult tooth’s position.

Most cases resolve on their own as kittens grow — just one of the many interesting quirks we see in developing mouths!

Good girl alert!

Poppi was an absolute superstar today 💕
She came in with a sore eye and bravely let us remove a sneaky grass seed that had worked its way in. No fuss, no drama — just wagging tails and very polite manners throughout.

Her eye is already feeling much better, and Poppi went home with lots of praise (and maybe a few extra pats).

We’re so proud of you, Poppi — such a good girl! Glad you loved your treats afterwards.

Why Annual Health Checks Are Essential for Your Bird
Our feathered friends are experts at hiding illness. In the wild, birds mask signs of weakness to protect themselves from predators — which means by the time symptoms are obvious, they may already be very unwell.
That’s why annual veterinary health checks are so important.
At your bird’s yearly exam, a veterinarian can:
Perform a full physical examination
Check weight and body condition
Assess beak, nails, feathers, and skin
Listen to the heart and lungs
Discuss diet, behaviour, and environment
Recommend blood tests or parasite screening if needed
Early detection can make all the difference. Many conditions — including nutritional deficiencies, liver disease, reproductive issues, and infections — can be managed far more successfully when caught early.
Regular check-ups also give you peace of mind and help ensure your bird enjoys a long, healthy, and happy life. 💚
If it’s been over a year since your bird’s last visit, now is the perfect time to schedule an appointment!
Contact us today to book your bird’s annual health check.

**Meet our spicy little lady of the week**

This gorgeous princess came in for her routine vaccination and health check — and to restock her very important “happy pills.”

Without them, she can express herself through what we might politely describe as demonic noises, dramatic behaviour, and very strong opinions about everyone in the room.
With them on board, she is much calmer, safer to handle, and far less likely to make her feelings known at full volume.

**Why stress matters in cats**
Cats are experts at hiding stress, but it often shows up in subtle (and sometimes not-so-subtle) ways, including:

* Urinary problems — stress is a major trigger for feline idiopathic cystitis and inappropriate urination
* Hiding or withdrawing — spending more time under beds, in cupboards, or becoming suddenly antisocial
* Aggression or behaviour changes — hissing, swatting, or biting when previously tolerant

Managing stress in cats can be truly life-changing — for both the cat and their humans. Sometimes this means environmental changes or pheromone therapy, and sometimes it means medication to help take the edge off.

A calm cat is a happier cat — and a much nicer patient.

✨ Tiny Fighter, Big Comeback ✨
Meet Clover, this incredible little warrior 💪
When she first came to Mayfair Veterinary Clinic, Clover weighed in at just 130 grams — barely bigger than a handful — and was struggling with a severely deformed leg.
After careful assessment, our team made the decision to surgically remove the leg to give her the best chance at a comfortable, happy life. And wow… did she rise to the challenge.
Fast forward to today — she recently returned to us for her desexing surgery, now tipping the scales at a healthy 1.3kg 🎉
Not only has she recovered beautifully, but she has absolutely thrived as a little tripod, zooming around with confidence and personality to spare.
Watching patients like her grow, heal, and flourish is exactly why we do what we do. 💕
We are so proud of this tiny legend and her amazing journey.
Darling Clover is now looking for her furever home, and is located at the Neonatal kitten rescue, Hobart.

We would love some newspaper if anyone has any they are throwing out. Thank you so much.
