Yesterday I met the cutest little puppy, Freddie 🥹
Freddie has been struggling with getting enough sleep during the day and we know that puppies turn into actual gremlins if they don't get their 20 hours of beauty sleep!

Freddie's parents and I chatted about sleep, plus activities and enrichment to do with her while she is awake that can help regulate a baby puppy to get those good zzz's. 😴

The puppy has been slowly learning to comfortably wear a muzzle 🤗

Thunder is an excellent scavenger on walks and while we are working very hard on our "leave-it" we also have started some muzzle training to minimise him practising the behaviour of scavenging while we continue to proof his "leave-it".

I also wanted to ensure he was muzzle trained if he needed to wear one for vet visits or if we went travelling to areas were he needed to wear one for safety due to a risk of baits.

It's a slow process of ensuring he is comfortable wearing it, but it's important not to rush the process!

One really important skill to be able to teach your dog is to have is the ability to be calm and to settle around other dogs.

Thunder, being an adolescent german shepherd can be very excited to make new dog friends, so instead of allowing wild play with new friends, which would have been very confronting to this new friend of his, we worked on laying down calmly together in between small, controlled sniffs and interactions with each other.

We also added in some basketball bouncing for a fun distraction! 🏀

🐾 Puppyhood (aka: Send Help, He Has Teeth) 🐾

I train dogs for a living… and yet here I am, being absolutely steamrolled by a tiny, chaotic spaniel named Raffles.

Let’s talk reality for a second — because if you’re in the trenches with a puppy, I see you. I am you. It's been 6 years since I last had a puppy and let me tell you, you certainly do forget how hard it is.

✨ SO. BITEY.
Everything is fair game: hands, ankles, shoelaces, sleeves, the air.
Redirects help… for about 0.2 seconds before he remembers he has teeth again.
He is out for my flesh like the tiny demon he is.

✨ Zero self-regulation.
He goes from “I am calm” to “I am a cyclone” in 0.0004 seconds.
He cannot stop himself. He will not stop himself.
He is powered entirely by vibes.

✨ Cries himself to sleep no matter what I do.
Overtired? Yes.
Reasonable? No.
Pitiful? Absolutely.
Do I sometimes sit on the floor whispering “please for the love of god close your eyes”?
Also yes.

✨ My older dog hates him.
HATE.
Hates the biting, hates the noise, hates the constant attempts to literally climb inside her personal space.
We’re doing management, peaceful separation, and controlled interactions… but let’s just say she would like to speak to the manager (me) about this new hire (Raffles).

✨ And yet…
He’s also funny, clever, sweet, earnest, and trying so hard to understand this big new world. He is confident, resilient and desperate to please.

Puppies aren’t “bad.” They’re just babies. Babies with knives in their mouths and no off-switch.

So if you’re raising a gremlin like Raffles:

🫠 You’re not alone.
🫣 You’re not failing.
😵‍💫 Your puppy isn’t broken.
💛 This stage really does pass.

Even dog trainers have puppies who lose the plot. Even behaviourists have older dogs doing their best “I didn’t sign up for this” face. Even I have nights where I stare into the void and whisper “mate… please.”

We’ll get there — with structure, management, enrichment, rest, training foundations, and a lot of humour, and wine (or we cry).

Weddings 💞

Last month we worked with a lovely couple and their sweet chocolate labrador Poppy for engagement photos. They wanted to have Poppy in the photos but needed some help with handling her throughout so they could focus on their day.

The main focus for Poppy was keeping her regulated while we needed to wait for her turn to be in the spotlight and positioning her for photos using a food lure instead of manually, which is a much more cooperative and kind method and more effective. We also needed to keep her out of the mud puddles which was probably the hardest part being a labrador!

I offer engagement and wedding services including photos, ceremony, a pre-event bath and more. Prices starting from $250+ within the Hobart area and surrounds.

I'm looking forward to working with Poppy again for the wedding!
