Great advice from Katie at Herdy Nerdy Dog Training - Herding Breed Specialist
PRACTICE WHAT YOU PREACH!
17 days ago, Ellie had a massive set back. After years of being able to function calmly around other dogs and even making friends, she landed herself smack in the middle of a fight.
I'm not here to debate who was right or wrong, how it could have been avoided etc etc. I'm here to tell you what happens to a reactive dog after these situations.
Day 1 & 2: Ellie did not eat. She would not take treats, would not eat her meals and couldn't even be tempted with KFC. She was on alert constantly and barely slept. When she did sleep, it was super light with her ears on full alert the whole time
Day 3: She took easy-to-eat treats.
Day 4: Ellie finally ate a meal. She also slept, but only snuggled right in against me with her head buried. 1.5 hours deep sleep for the first time in days.
Day 8: End of the cortisol holiday and we tried to leave the house. Not 5 mins down the road, she spotted a dog from her safe spot in the car and absolutely lost her mind. One of the worst reactions she's had in the car. Restart the cortisol holiday.
Day 12: Her favourite Aunty Linda from comes to visit and takes her for a walk. Ellie super engaged and offering heel - unusual behaviour. Lack of independence showing and her need for reassurance through the roof.
Day 16: I make the decision to restart her Behaviour medications. She's still only sleeping very lightly, she's not sleeping a lot when I'm not home, hyper-vigilant and struggling when away from home. Her behaviour at the vet was even erratic and unusual for her. Thank heavens for the fantastic team at who know her so very well and could see her distress.
Day 17: Relaxation Protocol starts while we wait for Medication to kick in. Yes- that same 15 day protocol so many of my regular Behaviour Mod clients are given.
Ellie and I walk the reactive lifestyle alongside every single one of our B-Mod clients. We're not perfect. We have setbacks too .
