The term "amygdala hijack" was coined by psychologist Daniel Goleman, and it perfectly describes what happens to a dog when they react. During a hijack, the emotional brain completely overwhelms the rational brain.

This explains why our dogs will not take a treat, cannot hear their name being called and why training at this point is the last thing we should be doing.

Think about the last time you were truly terrified. Maybe you thought you saw someone breaking into your house, or you nearly had a car accident. In that moment, could you have solved a maths problem? Recited your phone number? Of course not.

Your thinking brain was offline, overwhelmed by your survival instincts.

This is exactly what happens to your dog during a reactive episode. When you try to "get your dog's attention" or "make them sit" during a reaction, they're asking you to access a part of your dog's brain that's temporarily switched off.

It was never going to work, yet we end up feeling like we have failed because we tried.

This is often why working with our dogs in this way not only fails but can also affect our mental health and wellbeing.

Socialisation is a term that many struggle to define.
It's often confused with play, but play is a completely separate and important skill.
In a world that pushes constant interaction ….where dogs are expected to greet and play with every other dog they see, we can unintentionally create a dog who views every other dog as a source of excitement.
This isn’t socialisation… and it never was.

A better way to think about socialisation is acclimation, helping your dog adjust to everything the world offers, not just other dogs.

Weather
Surfaces
Animals
Crowds of people, all ethnicities, ages, and movement styles
Noises
Scents

That’s just a taste of what true socialisation really is.

Acceptance is another way to view it.
Accepting, not reacting.
Building positive associations.

That is true socialisation.

Insanely affordable for the content and help you are getting. So many of these games and concepts help with things beyond reactivity, so jump on it!

Calling owners of reactive dogs...want to help them?

What is Reactivity?
🐶 Reactivity in dogs isn’t aggression—it’s an emotional response to triggers like strangers, other dogs, loud noises, or sudden movements.
🐶 It often stems from fear, frustration, or insecurity. A reactive dog might bark, lunge, growl, or freeze when faced with something they perceive as threatening.

Why Does It Happen? 💡
Reactivity can develop from:
✔️ Lack of socialisation especially during key developmental stages
✔️ Negative past experiences (trauma or punishment-based training)
✔️ Genetic predispositions, temperament, epigenetics
✔️ Overstimulation
✔️ Frustration from restricted movement (like leash tension/fences)
✔️ Medical issues including pain an discomfort

A great post from Kamal.

“A recall isn’t just about obedience—it’s about connection.

It’s your dog saying:
“I choose you.”
Even when there are squirrels. Or other dogs. Or something rotting in the bushes.

And if you want your dog to make that choice joyfully, you need to make it worth their while.

Not all reinforcers are created equal.
Some dogs would sell their soul for a sausage. Others? They’d rather swim, tug, dig, chase, or just do something that feels wildly fun and uniquely them.

So start getting creative.
Deliver that reward like it’s the best thing that’s ever happened—make it dynamic, playful, surprising.
Turn your dog’s recall into the gateway to their favourite thing.

A recall can be more than coming away from fun—it can become the start of it.

As Susan Garrett says, “Your recall is a reflection of your relationship.”
And never a truer word was spoken.

So build it. Nourish it.
Reinforce it in a way your dog actually cares about.
Do that daily, and your dog will come flying back—not just because they should, but because they want to.”
