One Blood Donation. Three Lives Saved. ❤️

When a dog donates blood, the impact is powerful, just one donation can help save up to three other pets in need.

From trauma and surgery to snake bites and serious illness, blood transfusions are often the critical turning point.

It’s one of the most meaningful ways a healthy dog can help another.

Could your pet have eaten rat bait? Here’s what to watch for.

Even small amounts of rat bait can cause serious internal bleeding in dogs and cats, often days after ingestion. Early signs might be subtle, but they can quickly become life threatening.

Common symptoms include:
🔸 Pale gums
🔸 Lethargy or weakness
🔸 Coughing or laboured breathing
🔸 Bleeding from nose or gums
🔸 Vomiting or diarrhoea (with or without blood)
🔸 Bruising or swollen abdomen

If you notice these signs, especially after known or possible bait exposure, seek emergency care immediately.

Did you know dogs have blood types too? 🐶🩸

Just like people, dogs have different blood types—more than a dozen, in fact. Most pet owners don’t know their dog’s type—and that’s okay. But in a veterinary emergency, it can be lifesaving.

Every donation helps give critically ill pets a second chance at life.

Curious about how canine blood donation works?

🌼🐶 Celebrating Daisy 🐶🌼

As we mark our first birthday, we’re remembering some of the incredible patients who’ve inspired us — like Daisy. 💛

After being hit by a car, Daisy arrived in critical condition with a traumatic diaphragmatic hernia. She was rushed into emergency surgery at Melbourne Animal Referral Services, and although the procedure was a success, Daisy had a tough road ahead.

She spent 7 days in hospital recovering from bruised lungs, internal injuries, and a fractured pelvis. But through it all, Daisy’s spirit shone — and when she wagged her tail for the first time, we knew she was on her way back.

Now, Daisy’s home, happy, and loving trips to her favourite place — the beach! 🐾

🌟🐶 A Sterling Patient 🐶🌟

As we celebrate our first birthday, we’re looking back on some of the unforgettable patients who’ve left their pawprints on our hearts — like Sterling. 🐾💙

Sterling came to us in a critical state after a traumatic accident where he impaled himself on a large stick. The stick had penetrated through his groin but — miraculously — missed all his vital abdominal organs. After rapid stabilisation and a CT scan, the surgical team at Melbourne Animal Referral Services performed an after-hours procedure to safely remove the stick and all associated debris.

Sterling recovered in hospital for 48 hours and was discharged home, but the journey wasn’t over. He developed a severe abscess with resistant bacteria at the site and had to return for a second surgery and drain placement. After another 48-hour stay, this brave boy was finally back home to continue healing.

Sterling’s strength and spirit amazed us all — and we’re so proud to have been part of his recovery. 💙

🎉 Meet Rex – Our First Ever Patient at AES Hawthorn East! 🐾

On opening night one year ago, Rex made history as our very first patient! After suddenly vomiting and collapsing on a walk, he was rushed in - weak in the legs and dribbling urine. Dr. Sophie Plasto, now our Clinical Lead, was on shift and took immediate action.

Blood and urine tests came back clear, but Rex’s symptoms pointed to a possible toxicity. He stayed with us overnight for supportive care, and by morning, he was back on his feet - wagging tail and all!

A year on, Rex is still thriving (and still always on the lookout for food, according to his humans!).

Here’s to you, Rex - for kicking off our AES Hawthorn East journey with resilience and a whole lot of heart. 💙

🌟Meet Milo 🌟

When 14-week-old Milo dug under the fence to visit a neighbour, he didn’t expect to meet a 35kg dog who didn’t appreciate the surprise. After suffering critical injuries, it took the fast action and collaboration of four veterinary teams to save his life.

From Green Cross North Ringwood to Melbourne Animal Specialist Hospital, Ready Vet Go - Pet Ambulance & Mobile Urgent Vet Care, and our team at AES Hawthorn East, Milo’s journey is a powerful reminder of what’s possible when clinics work together.
