Did you know that dental care is essential for preventing systemic diseases?
Oral infections, such as gingivitis, don’t just affect the teeth and gums—they can spread bacteria to vital organs. Regular dental care helps prevent pain, infection, and long-term complications, keeping your fur baby happy and healthy.

Keiran is a showdog and his silky coat is his prized asset. He had a gastric dilatation (bloat) scare when his owner was overseas, not too long ago.He thus, presented the other day for a laparascopic assisted gastropexy. This is the procedure whereby his stomach is sutured to the abdominal wall via laparascopy assistance ie colloquially called key hole surgery. This enabled him to keep his long ,wavy and silky locks of hair largely unscathed while the procedure was done with him making it on time for dinner. We consider it a day procedure meaning they are discharged on the same day. At Vetcare Hawthorn, we offer various laparascopic procedures including key hole speys and cryptorchid castrations. These are minimally invasive procedures that result in speedy recovery and early return to normal activity. Book your dog for any key hole procedure at (03) 9813 4977.

Bonnie came in last week for a sudden onset left hindlimb lameness that came about while playing at the dog park. The owner immediately called us and came in for an assessment and a cranial cruciate ligament rupture was diagnosed on physical examination and radiographs under sedation. Unfortunately, the management of this condition is surgical and off which there is a few surgical options available to which a Tibial Plateu Levelling Osteotomy (TPLO) is the gold standard procedure we use for the management of these cases. It it important to note that cranial cruciate rupture in dogs is slightly different from humans in that in dogs it is a degenerative condition while in humans it is a traumatic condition ie mostly occurs due to sharp twists and turns involving the knee and most consistently affects sports players of contact sports but can also happen while skiing down a steep slope. This means in dogs ,that is ,if this happens in one knee it is more than likely going to happen in the opposite knee within 18 months or so. In labradors, if the one knee is affected the opposite one is affected within 18 months in 40% of affected cases. It is a common cause of hindlimb lameness in dogs of all weights and we offer TPLO for all weight classes from Chihuahuas to Great Danes.

Life is a composite of questions and answers; rewards and punishments! Today, the question is why? Why, Bandit? You rewarded us with your entry into our lives and punishment when you exit! Such a heavy blow to your human mum Bandit! Through the tears ,she still had some gratitude left in her to come and drop some goodies and a thank you card. In my mind the thank you should be the other way round. Thank you for entrusting the care of your one and only Bandit aka Bandito aka Mr B onto us for so many years.....it was a great honour!

Meet Ben, the approx. 8 year old neutered bunny that came in the other day for amorous behaviour towards his owner by 'hu***ng' her hand. He was des*xed over 7 years ago and roughly about 6 months ago, he started 'spraying' and 'hu***ng' his mums hand. This has been, for a lack of a better term , a source of 'friction' between the two apartment mates and further 'attrition looming , the owner called us and Ben came 'zooming' in for an assessment. This can be associated with possible remnant testicular tissue or urinary tract infection and simply bordom related behavioural changes. We often try to keep such cases simple and slowly mount a stepwise diagnostic workup starting with history and observation. We are still at the first stage and our next move is informed by the report back from Ben's mum to see if she can identify any triggers and and also to see if he can be re-directed to demonstrate his affection towards an inanimate object like teddy. The next steps may include blood work, urinalyis and inaging to ascertain if there is any masses that are producing androgens ( make s*x hormones). We will keep you posted on Ben's progress. We take consults for dogs, cats, bunnies, ferrets and birds. Do not hesitate to call us if you have any issues, concerns or questions on rabbits- the fastest growing pet in Australia in terms of bunny ownership. Visit our website.

It was with great sadness that we had to handover Luci's ashes this afternoon.

We were all taken by complete surprise at the presentation of Luci to see us on the fateful day and rapid deterioration of her condition and sudden unexpected death. Luci and I had a love hate relationship in which she would be aloof and resisting her monthly cytopoint injections. She was in great health and we only just saw her for these allergy injections of which the last one was about a week to a fortnight before the fateful emergency presentation to see us.

We hurriedly performed thoracic radiographs and blood work and identified an enlarged cardiac silhouette and increased kidney enzymes. The rapid deterioration and swift demise make the exact cause of death difficult to determine. Unfortunately, without performing a post mortem we are unable to determine the exact cause of death. Granted, this makes closure ,that bit more difficult.

What a pleasant surprise that the owner got some flowers from an anonymous person. Word on the street is that Luci sent her mum some good bye flowers.

Luci has brought the whole tightly knit community at Hawthorn Park apartments and Hawthorn East that much closer, as the consoling messages, hugs and kisses keep coming to comfort Luci's mum.

She will be sorely missed.

Working with animals can be a gift and a curse and often leaves you out of purse. Cats are wonderful creatures and we cannot live without them. Teddy was in hospital for 'triaditis' and thankfully he is doing well and has been discharged and living his best life at home. We cannot say the same for his human mum , the client ,who is spending the weekend in hospital after he bit her while both the mum and us were restraining him. This could never have happened to a more understanding human being. Cat bites and scratches are not to be taken lightly as they can lead to extended hospital stay, surgery or even death. The mouths of cats are laden with bacteria such as Mannheimia species and can cause serious problems when innoculated into human tissue through bites. Teddy made us review our manual handling procedures as we always strive to be a stress free practice for cats, dogs, rabbits and guinea pigs. A big point of reflection! It is not everyday that an owner accepts your apology for not ensuring her safety and causing her severe pain and loss of a weekend in hospital. We wish you a speedy recovery.

Gilly was in for her annual dental scale and polish and left us some treats! Dental disease has been linked to kidney and heart disease and we thus encourage regular dental scale and polish , we therefore, offer free dental assessments ,all year round. We generally perform these procedures under general anaesthesia and we include local anaesthesia also referred to as nerve blocks to desensitive each and every tooth to help with post op comfort. Thanks Gilly for the treats ,you 'fine filly!'. Please remember chocolate is toxic to our furry friends during thia festive season.
