ON THIS DAY 47 years ago we experienced another heat wave resulting in considerable loss of live poultry in the Hawkesbury. Unfortunately the story of my parents losing sheds full of chickens and headlining the front page of the next Hawkesbury Gazette to be published was nothing to get excited about. Back then, there were no sprinklers installed on the shed rooftops to keep the temperature down inside. Never wanting to experience that drama again, sprinklers were installed for the next heatwave. I remember we were allowed to stay home from school on the Monday to help remove the carcases from the sheds and will never forget it. It was quite devastating for Laymour. (1979). Today in 2026 a high of 43°C is forecast for Vineyard NSW.

The Grand-Matriach of Laymour, Pat Schembri! 63 years ago Mum and Dad started clearing 25 acres of bushland for their poultry farm at Vineyard. They became the largest supplier of started pullets and day-old chicks to large commercial egg farmers throughout NSW. Mum worked everyday until she was well into her 80's. Happy 93rd birthday Mum, you're simply the BEST!
