And then it became three...

There are now 3 confirmed properties with H7 avian influenza (bird flu) in the Euroa area. This new property is adjacent to one of the 2 previously confirmed sites.

We have issued a housing requirement for poultry owners with more than 50 birds in the restricted area near Euroa. This is an area of approximately 5 km around the infected properties and includes Euroa.

Housing your birds helps reduce the risk of spreading avian influenza, however it will not eliminate the risk of spread and stringent biosecurity practices are still necessary.

A housing requirement means you must house or keep your birds enclosed in sheds or cages to separate them from wild birds.

Please continue to report any cases of unexplained bird deaths to the VicEmergency Hotline on 1800 226 226.

After 35 years of publishing Australasian Poultry magazine we have decided it's time to call it a day. Vol 35 No 6 Feb/Mar 2025 is our final issue.
The current economic situation along with less interest in magazine reading and fewer newsagents selling the magazine have all contributed to this difficult situation.

NEW AVIAN INFLUENZA OUTBREAK - VICTORIA

This is a different strain to the 2024 outbreak out towards Geelong which resulted in the culling of 1.3million chickens (and is the main cause of the current egg shortage).

Please take precautions to reduce interaction between your flocks and wild birds where possible.

The H5N1 strain is also expected to arrive in the coming weeks and these precautions are very much needed to reduce the impact as much as we can.

Agriculture Victoria has confirmed the presence of avian influenza at a poultry property in northern Victoria, which has now been placed into quarantine.

AVGEN RARE BREEDS LOOKING FOR DEDICATED BREEDERS

As we all know, AvGen Poultry were the only successful group to bring in new poultry breeds into Australia since the 1950's and seen pictures of their stunning birds. Although the numbers are slowly increasing, they are still considered incredibly rare by numbers overall in Australia.
Now there is the opportunity for more people to own these awesome bloodlines/

Expressions of interest are being sought for dedicated breeders who will actually treasure, nurture and grow the numbers of the following breeds. They are being released as breeding trios ONLY.
* Chamois Appenzellers
* Dutch Owl Beards (NOONE IN AUSTRALIA HAS THESE - THEY ARE A NEW RELEASE AND GENETICS ARE VERY LIMITED).
* Derbyshire Red Caps

Picture below are Appenzeller X pullets that I had the pleasure of rehoming into backyards about 5 years ago. The cream and white ones are referred to as 'Chamois' and are one of the colours that are available in Dutch Owl Beards.

The genetics of these birds are in dire straits and are risk of being lost forever, so these birds are not a project for backyard breeders. In my opinion (and many others) they should NOT be cross bred with any other breeds, they are FARRRR too valuable.

There are more than one trio available for these three breeds. Poultry transport will be required if you are not able to pickup from central NSW.

Please share far and wide so we can find these birds a good home.
