Temperatures are set to rise into the low 40's, high 30's this long weekend and will stay with us until late Wednesday.
☀️Please don't walk your dogs between 10am and 6pm to prevent both burnt feet and heatstroke.
☀️Never take dogs or cats for a drive where you may be tempted to leave them in the car for a few minutes, as that's all it will take for them to pass away.
☀️Ensure they have access to adequate shade and cool water throughout the day. The best tip is to let them enjoy laying in front of your air conditioner or fans inside your home.
☀️For cats, the best thing is for them to be kept inside 24/7 to protect Australia's unique wildlife. But our shire only has a night-time curfew. So if your cat is outside, make sure they have fresh cool water and a good place in the shade to hide out in.
☀️For our small pets, like ferrets, bunnies, guinea pigs, etc., simply bring them inside. Leaving them outside trapped in their enclosures, even if placed in shade with ice blocks, wet towels, cooling mats, etc., just doesn't cut it when it gets this hot.
☀️Small animals cannot regulate their heat like humans can, meaning they cannot sweat. They regulate it through the tips of their ears, nose, and tongue. So laying on a cool brick, tile, ice block, or covering their enclosure in cool wet towels only works for a few minutes before it creates a sauna effect that they cannot escape from. In the wild, they would be underground in their burrows, far away from the Aussie summer heat. As pets, they don't have that luxury.
🌡Know the signs of heatstroke in animals. Laying sprawled out flat in their enclosure, rapid and shallow breathing (panting), vomiting, diarrhea, drooling/wet nose, hot ears, lethargy, weakness, confusion, and in severe cases, seizures or collapse.
A combination of even a few of these symptoms constitutes a trip to the vet for any pet, not just the small ones.
In closing, simply keep all your pets away from the heat by bringing them inside your home and let them chill in the same comfort you enjoy.
Cherish your pets.
